Love Is Scary, But It’s Worth It
At the end of the day, the person we love is either going to be our forever or that relationship will ultimately end, and there is something terrifying and romantic about that all at the same time.
Love is a strange and fickle thing. That is probably why it scares most of us. It sneaks up on you when you least expect it and brings people into your life at that most random and inconvenient time. It powers over every thought and emotion you have and makes you irrationalize every situation. It keeps you up at night with thoughts that invade your dreams and can make your stomach drop in an instant.
So why do people allow themselves to fall in love? Why not keep every wall and barrier up around our hearts to protect it at all costs from this insane sensation?
I don’t think we have a choice. When it happens, it takes you by surprise, with no warning.
It floods in and all the sudden; we care, we heal, we become present, and we can’t stop it from happening. We start caring for someone other than ourselves. We see beauty in the world that we didn’t see before. We begin to fight for a person with every fiber of our being. We let our hearts open and take on someone else’s. Their burdens become our burdens. Their battles become our battles. Their pain and joy becomes our pain and joy. We become instinctively protective over someone else and try to keep them safe from everything.
This is why love is scary. It is a beautiful and enticing thing that has the power to overtake us and potentially break us. At the end of the day, the person we love is either going to be our forever or that relationship will ultimately end, and there is something terrifying and romantic about that all at the same time.
I think love is meant to scare us. If it were easy, then it wouldn’t be worth working for. It wouldn’t be worth our effort to try and then try again. The heartbreak that comes with it is just a part of life. It’s what helps heal us and help us find what we are truly looking for, not just the fairy tale idea we have in our minds. Love is a challenge. We challenge ourselves to allow someone else to be a part of our lives. We allow someone else to take the weight of our hearts and trust that they won’t let us down.
Love is scary and unpredictable, and I don’t know that we will ever fully understand it. Maybe that’s the beauty of it. With every up, down, and space in between, love will always be worth fighting for.
