Summer is just around the corner, which means it’s about time for all the thrilling, heart-wrenching, squee-worthy blockbusters to drop in theaters. I am STOKED for what’s to come this summer, including some long-awaited sequels from our favorite franchises. Get your finances in order, because here are the ten movies you won’t want to miss this summer.
1. Deadpool 2 (May 18)
Of course Deadpool is at the top of this list, not only because it’s coming super soon (May 18! Wooo!) but because it’s one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Deadpool, the 2016 film that followed the anti-hero of the same name, was a total hit — hopefully the next installment is up to par. Of course, Ryan Reynolds has been selling it hard, using both Canadian pop goddess Celine Dion and British soccer player David Beckham to promote the film. Trust me, Ryan, you don’t have to tell me twice.
2. Ocean’s 8 (June 8)
Comedian John Mulaney once joked that Ocean’s 11 wouldn’t have worked if the characters were women, and boy, was he wrong. Ocean’s 8 has a stellar cast lined up, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, and Rihanna. The women band together to steal a prize jewel from the star-studded Met Gala, which is sure to become meta af. It looks like it’ll be a hilarious, action-packed thriller, and you’ll find me in theaters in early June.
3. Incredibles 2 (June 15)
As a kid, I absolutely loved The Incredibles. So when I, an adult in my mid-twenties, heard they’d be releasing a sequel this summer, I knew I’d haul my grown woman butt right to the theater opening day. We’ve waited 14 years for this moment, and I literally wouldn’t care if the whole movie revolved around nothing — which, of course, doesn’t seem to be the case. Instead, the superhero family seems to be struggling with fame and civic duties now that the public knows they’re back in action. And, of course, there’s still going to be plenty of family time that’s sure to make us feel warm and fuzzy. Bring it on.
4. Sorry To Bother You (July 16)
This satirical comedy looks like it’s going to examine how our society perceives and responds to race. The story follows a black telemarketer who discovers customers respond better to his “white voice,” which inevitably helps him find success in the corporate world. The film is full of familiar faces, such as Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out, Atlanta), Tessa Thompson (Annihilation, Thor: Ragnarok) and Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name, The Social Network) and is sure to make you laugh (and think).
5. Crazy Rich Asians (August 17)
We are so READY for this movie. Based on the bestselling book by Kevin Kwan, the movie follows Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), who she soon discovers is wealthiest bachelor in Singapore when they visit the country for a wedding. This movie looks extra af, in all the best ways.
6. Ant-Man And The Wasp (July 6)
After the smashing success that Infinity War was, we all need a Marvel movie, like, pronto. Luckily, Ant-Man and the Wasp is hitting theaters in less than a month. Ant-Man (who was suspiciously missing from the Avengers flick) is about to get a new partner in crime, which means we get to say hello to a new hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Personally, I just want to know the timeline of the movie, especially in relation to Infinity War, because for all we know, this film might be linked pretty closely to the mysterious next Avengers film.
7. Searching (August)
Searching is different from other films because of one pretty big factor: the entire film takes place on smartphone and computer screens. No, I’m serious. When David Kim (John Cho) discovers his daughter is missing, he’ll do anything to find her, which includes searching through her web history and interviewing people who knew her. What he discovers is every parents’ nightmare: he never actually knew his daughter at all.
8. Eighth Grade (July 13)
Comedian Bo Burnham’s next project is a little out of his comfort zone. He’s the writer and director of Eighth Grade, a film that follows 14-year-old Kayla (Elsie Fisher) as she maneuvers the last weeks of classes before high school. The film looks almost too real, bringing back plenty of cringeworthy memories from my own awkward pre-teen years.
9. Mama Mia! Here We Go Again (July 20)

It’s been ten years since Mama Mia! hit theaters, and the full cast is back for an encore. Instead of prepping for a wedding, Amanda Seyfried’s Sophie finds herself pregnant without her mother by her side to help her out. She employs the help of her mother’s friends and her three fathers and learns more about her mother’s past in the process. The film weaves between past and present and is sure to be a nostalgic treat for Mama Mia! fans.
10. The Spy Who Dumped Me (August 3)
Mila Kunis is back in action. She plays Audrey, the ex-girlfriend of a man who turns her life upside down when he re-enters her life with a team of assassins on his tail and a secret: he’s actually a CIA agent. Audrey and her best friend Morgan (Kate McKinnon) find themselves in the middle of all the action-packed drama. They’re amateurs, of course, but that doesn’t stop them from being compete badasses. I’m 100% here for female-centered action flicks!
