Are The People You’re Putting Effort Into Worth Your Time?

Oftentimes the relationships that we have can either make life a beautiful journey or make the road we travel very unpleasant and stressful.

Do you have people in your life who are always there for you no matter what? If you do, then you must know how truly blessed you are. Just know that if you have one person who enjoys the good times with you AND who helps you through the bad times, then you have one of life’s greatest treasures.

Oftentimes the relationships that we have can either make life a beautiful journey or make the road we travel very unpleasant and stressful. Let’s be honest, there are plenty of people who may call themselves your friends or who may play the part of the concerned family members but who are detrimental to the quality of your life. You are probably the one who gives your all. You are always that person going the extra mile, but when the tables are turned, you are left in the lurch. I bet this hurts you right down to your core.

Sometimes some of the key people in your life can be so uncaring and callous with your feelings that they actually drain the positivity out of your life. Some advice: For your own sanity and for you to live a happier life, take that important step, as difficult as it may be, to create some distance from these people. You may not be able to cut them off completely, especially if they are family, but you MUST consciously set boundaries for yourself in terms of how much you invest in proportion to what you get in return. I know that for some of us, it is easier said than done. But remember that in creating this distance from these people and by setting boundaries in your relationship with them, you are prioritizing your happiness and asserting your value in this life. You deserve that!

Then, there are the genuine people. When you have them in your life, it just feels right. These relationships take very little effort to uphold. Why? Because their actions speak louder than their words; because you just know in your heart of hearts that they will simply be there for you.

A person who truly knows and loves you will see the pain in your eyes, even when you try to disguise it. How truly special is it when they are there to face that pain with you, even when they know that they can’t take it away? They don’t always have to go all out, they simply give what they can because they truly care about you.

Of course, there will be disagreements along the way, some envy maybe, and resentment sometimes, but these bumps in the relationship road will be insignificant in the long run. I read this somewhere, “If a person is meant to be in your life, all the open doors and windows in the world won’t make them leave.” Wise words—true words!

Even on your worst of days, those true to you will be supportive. Know that they may not always agree with you and will most probably let you know, but they have your back, regardless. These are the most important kinds of people to have in your life—rarely will you need to question where you stand in your relationship with them.

It is a sad reality that there are people out there who will only be there for you as long as they need you. I am sure that you have encountered the likes of such people. When you no longer serve a purpose to them, they will go their own way and never look back. So pay attention to the people who you encounter and interact with. Notice those people who show up for you unconditionally and those who show up only when it benefits them.

Remember to always and forever treasure the people who care about you and who will stay by your side no matter what, through the good times and the bad times. Your life is far too precious, so don’t waste it on people who will never value you. My hope is that you will go forward from here and know who deserves to be a priority in your life.

Never forget: Quality, not quantity.
