It’s Okay To Need Someone

Being strong, tough, driven, determined, and someone who has it all handled is an amazing feeling. But wouldn’t it be nice, even just for a moment, to be able to let your guard down, take off your bulletproof vest, throw away your mask, and just be openly vulnerable in front of someone who you know…

I am strong. I am independent. I am empowered. I can do anything. You can do anything. Nothing is impossible.

Because why not? Most of us have been raised believing that. In fact, we believed in it so excessively that we have a tendency to rely on ourselves a bit too much, thinking that we do not need anyone else. Perhaps we’ve been let down too many times, betrayed too many times, lost too many times, and now we know better. At the end of the day, the only person you can really depend on is yourself.

So you shut everyone out. You build high walls around your heart. You refuse to let anyone in, because you know that when you do, everything will change. Is that risk even worth taking?

Yes, you are strong. Independent. Financially stable. Self-sustained. Put together. Determined. Successful. And that is great. Amazing, in fact.

But wouldn’t it be nice to share all that with someone? All the victories, accomplishments, and success. Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone waiting for you and your stories at the end of a hard day? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a shoulder to lean on when you’re having problems? Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone stroke your hair and make you feel safe when the whole world is falling apart? Wouldn’t it be nice to be wrapped in someone’s arms, making all the negativity go away, even just for a moment?

Sometimes we have a tendency to be too self-absorbed. Too independent. We make people around us feel like we don’t need them. We push away the people we love, thinking that we can do things on our own. We assure them we are fine. Because we are. We’re fine just being in our own company. We survived like that for years.

But at some point, someone walks into our life and changes how we see the world. We are fine on our own, but everything is better with that person around. Everything is easier. Like they were meant to be there all along. Things fall perfectly into place, and it makes you wonder how you have survived this long without them.

Being strong, tough, driven, determined, and someone who has it all handled is an amazing feeling. But wouldn’t it be nice, even just for a moment, to be able to let your guard down, take off your bulletproof vest, throw away your mask, and just be openly vulnerable in front of someone who you know will not judge you? To get off your high horse, wear your heart on your sleeve, and just cry like a little child. To be comforted. To be taken care of. To be safe.

Sometimes, you get so used to being the provider. To being the helper. To being the person responsible. To being the problem solver. To being the one taking care of others. Eventually, you forget how it feels when someone has your back, making sure you don’t break.

No matter how strong or independent you are, when your Wonder Woman or Superman cape is off, when your superpowers fail you, when you get too exhausted carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, it’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to need someone. This world is cruel and chaotic enough. We all need a safe haven. We all need a home. Or perhaps someone who can be both.
