When you look in the mirror, what do you see?

I hope you see beauty looking back at you. I hope you see the flecks of color in your eyes as bits of magic. I hope you see the freckles on your face as kisses from angels. I hope you see the birthmark on your face as a hello from God. I hope you see the lines around your eyes as memories of laughter, and I hope you see the folks that made you smile within the laugh lines that surround your mouth. I hope you see the strength of your ancestors in the richness of your skin, and that you see the stories of those who came before you in the curl or color of your hair.

I hope you see that there is not one person on this great big earth that looks like you, and I hope you know that that’s a magnificent thing. I hope you see your magnificence.

When you look in the mirror what do you see?

I hope you see past your features. I hope you dig deeper, and see your intelligence. We cannot wear our intelligence as we wear a pair of glasses. We cannot put it on like mascara – but that doesn’t mean it’s not there. It’s within you. It’s part of your skin and part of your bones. It’s nestled deep within your soul. When you stand before the mirror, I hope you see your intelligence staring back at you. I hope you remember that your intelligence is not intertwined with your physical appearance – they have nothing to do with one another, and they never will.

I hope you dig deeper, and see how good your heart is – and that that’s something to be proud of. Do not hide it. Do not disguise it. Do not try to meld it into something else. The world needs more good hearts – they need to be cultivated, and celebrated, and cherished. Own your good heart, and let it be seen.

When you look in the mirror, what do you see?

I hope you see that you must show up for yourself. I hope you know it’s ok to be your own cheerleader and it’s ok to be your own worst critic, for nobody will ever be able to push you like, you. And that’s ok. In fact, it’s rather special. There is no relationship like the one you will have with yourself – treat it well.

When you look in the mirror, I hope you look back at yourself with love and grace. I hope you are able to forgive yourself for your mistakes. I hope you are able to learn from them, too. Give yourself the kindness you deserve, the talking to you need, and an abundance of love. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
