Why We Love People We Shouldn’t

We still love those who have broken us and who have betrayed us. And that doesn't makes us weak. That doesn't make us dumb. No, that makes us beautiful. That makes us strong. That makes us courageous.

I don’t know why we do it. Why we let ourselves becomes so intrigued and blinded by love that isn’t right. I don’t know why we let our hearts feel so deeply and beat so loudly for people who don’t care. For people who don’t love us back.

It’s amazing to think that we wait and wait for months on end for someone who won’t ever walk back into our lives. It’s incredible to think that we try so hard for someone who will never try back. It’s a tragedy, a bittersweet story, to always be the one who loves more. To always be the one who cares more.

Why do we stumble so hard for people who turn their heads so far away from us? Why do we cry at night praying for their heart, when they probably don’t ever give us a second thought.

Why do we love the ones who don’t deserve it?

Maybe we will always be the kind of people whose hearts spread wings to everyone we meet. Maybe we will always be the ones who cry and smile at hearts that don’t have room for ours. Maybe we will always be the ones who wait and hope and wait some more.

And I don’t think that makes us weak. It doesn’t make us small or insignificant. It doesn’t make us crazy or pathetic.

No, I think it makes us brave. Because to love someone so desperately even after that love dies, is a miracle. It’s beautiful. To have the capacity in our hearts to still believe. To have room in our hearts even for people who have left us.

I don’t think it has to be something that is sad. I don’t think it has to be something that is wrong.

Because when it comes to love, there are no rules. There’s no handbook with instructions for us to follow. There’s no logic. Because love? It’s unpredictable. It’s insanity and madness. Love doesn’t make any sense. And it doesn’t have to.

When we fall in love, we don’t just fall a little. We don’t fall in baby steps or on our tip toes. No, we run towards it without hesitation. We jump and leap and sprint towards it. We don’t think about it, because we know that even if we get a little taste of it, it’ll be worth all of the obstacles. It’ll be worth it even when our lungs give out.

So even when the love we cherish turns to dust and crumbles beneath our feet. And even when the love we thought we had, turns out to be just a joke, we can’t let it go. We still find a way to believe in it. We still find a way to hold onto it, even after the flame burns out. We still love that person so much despite all the pain and the broken promises.

We still love those who have broken us and who have betrayed us. And that doesn’t makes us weak. That doesn’t make us dumb. No, that makes us beautiful. That makes us strong. That makes us courageous.

Without people like us, love wouldn’t exist at all. Without us, love wouldn’t shine so brightly when it actually decides to show up at our front door. Without people like us, love wouldn’t be so magical when it finally comes our way. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
