How To Take Care Of Your Skin This Summer
You know that feeling when you take a cold shower after being out in the sun all day? That's what this hydrating gel feels like.
Being outside in the hot sun makes us look and feel good, however, the UV rays are very intense, and too much sun exposure comes with consequences. So whether if you’re outside in your backyard or you’ve found yourself (socially distant) on the beach, keep in mind how important it is to take care of your skin while you’re soaking up the sun.
These are some of my favorite products that help me take care of my skin:
Glossier is one of the leading skincare and makeup companies, supporting all skin tones and skin issues. I’ve tried and loved nearly every Glossier product, but the one that really stands out to me the most is the Invisible Shield Sunscreen.
While I apply a normal sunscreen to the rest of my body, I like to use Glossier’s sunscreen on my face not only because it smells amazing but it’s lightweight and doesn’t feel like I’ve caked something onto my skin. If I’m out in the sun for a couple of hours, I’ll apply the sunscreen to my face 2-3 times (just to be extra safe), and I never, ever get a burn!
If you’re looking for a product to help prevent sunburn or to soothe your skin after you do get burned, this Aloe gel from SunBum is your saving grace. Not only is this vegan, gluten-free, reef-friendly, and hypoallergenic, but it’s also offered as a lotion or a spray if you want to mix it up and try out all the different mediums.
Aloe is known for alleviating burns and Vitamin E is known to help nourish your skin so that peeling doesn’t occur. The cucumber extract, tea tree oil, and jojoba oil are full of antioxidants and great for moisturizing after the sun has sucked you dry. Feel free to lather some all over your body before you are exposed to the sun too!
Drifter Organics is an all-natural skincare brand that offers lip balms, face oils, and body butters all comprised of natural oils and ingredients. I’ve been using this Gold Mine Face Oil for a couple of months now and I truly adore it.
Not only does this face oil moisturize your skin, but it gives a nice glow too. The vanilla and carrot seed essential oils have a subtle but amazing scent, and I like to use it with my gua sha before bed.
The sun can be a killer and it can suck the moisture out of your face so fast, especially when or if you get a sunburn. Even if you have oily skin and the hot and humid summer months make it worse, it is important to keep your face moisturized and somewhat oiled-up to keep moisture in while you’re avoiding or healing from sunburn.
When you’re going outside, don’t forget about applying SPF to your lips! This is an often overlooked area of our skin. What better way to take care of your lips than with a tinted balm with SPF?!
Neutrogena offers a lip tinted balm in various shades. I have the shade Petal Glow, which adds a subtle darker pink hue to my lips. The best part, though, is that it has SPF 20 in it too! Along with my skincare and face washing process, I add this lip balm before I head outside, and this has become a natural part of my everyday routine. I keep it in a beach bag so that I can apply it continuously throughout the day when needed.
You know that feeling when you take a cold shower after being out in the sun all day? That’s what this hydrating gel from Tarte feels like. The gel is vegan and lightweight and not greasy or sticky at all.
I like to dip my finger in the jar and put little spots all around my face until it feels like I have enough to spread around. It’s super refreshing and helps keep the moisture in my face after I’ve been drying out my skin in the sun and then in the shower. Bonus: it smells great too. This product is a summertime must-have!
Other tips for taking care of your skin in the summer:
- Drink your water! The last thing you want is to be dehydrated while you’re sweating consistently in the dry, humid air. Water is good and good for you (for both your insides and your outsides).
- Take care of your eyes. The skin under and around your eyes are the thinnest. With that being said, if you’re spending time out in the sun, wear sunglasses. Apply sunscreen under your eyes (just be careful not to get it in your eye) and put cucumber slices and/or aloe gel on the skin after you’ve been outside.
- Take time away from wearing makeup. I know plenty of people that go to the beach with a full face of makeup. Yes, you’re a queen in your lashes and with your foundation, but it’s important to take time away from all that and let your face breathe.
- Don’t forget about the skin on your feet. We tend to put a lot of care and focus into our skin (mostly our face) that we neglect the feet, as gross as they are. Don’t forget to put sunscreen on your feet and toes and exfoliate every once in a while just for a little TLC.
