Jennifer Garner is passing Jenna Rink to a new generation, and she’s cheering from the producer’s chair. Her verdict on her replacement Emily Bader: “she’s adorable.”

Cameras rolled June 23 in Los Angeles under the working title Authentic, with a wrap targeted for August 11, roughly 35 days of principal photography. The production pulled a California tax credit of about $10.9 million against $31.2 million in qualified spending, and Netflix is treating this as a reimagining rather than a shot-for-shot redo. One confirmed modern update: the Jenna Rink equivalent, now named Grace Fischer, has two dads.

Brett Haley is directing, fresh off Emily Bader’s Netflix rom-com People We Meet on Vacation, which spent four weeks on the platform’s Global Top 10 and charted in 92 countries. He brought Bader with him and had Logan Lerman in mind early as her foil. Hannah Marks wrote the script, with revisions by Flora Greeson (The Princess Diaries 3), and Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum are producing through RK Films.

Garner is an executive producer, and she says even she doesn’t know how the story will change. “I don’t really know what it’s going to be,” she told E! News at the Los Angeles premiere of The Five Star Weekend on July 8. “But I think people will have a blast watching it.”

For her, the new version carries the memory of original director Gary Winick, who died of brain cancer in 2011, seven years after the first film came out. “I feel like the legacy of our director continues,” she said. “It just makes me so happy.”
No release date has been announced, but with a short shoot and post-production ahead, 2027 is the likeliest window.
