Jayden Adams, the South Africa Midfielder Who Played All Three Group Games at the 2026 World Cup, Has Died at 25

By

Two weeks ago he carried the hopes of a nation onto the field at the World Cup. One of those games came a single day after he lost his grandmother, and he played anyway.

The cause of Jayden Adams‘ death has not been confirmed, and South Africa’s sports minister is asking the public to hold off on theories while his family grieves.

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents,” Gayton McKenzie said in a July 11 statement, calling Adams a player who grew “from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder featured in all three of South Africa’s group games this summer, including the 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic that he played one day after his grandmother passed away. His goal-line contributions helped power a 1-0 win over South Korea that sent Bafana Bafana into the knockout rounds for the first time, where they fell to Canada in the round of 32.

The South African Football Players Union said it was “devastated,” describing him as a young life “that still had so much to offer.”
