Mindy Kaling Lost 40 Pounds Without a Restrictive Diet. She’s Never Weighed Herself During It.

Mindy Kaling told Bustle this week that her weight loss is about staving off the diabetes that runs on both sides of her family. She wants at least 20 more years for her three kids.

“When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons. Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes. I want to live at least 20 more years for my kids.”

On how she did it: “I eat what I like to eat. If I do any kind of restrictive diet, it never really works for me. I just eat less of it.”

She says she understands the scrutiny. “It’s sometimes no fun when one of your favorite actors loses weight. You have an idea of what they were like when you grew attached to them.”

Kaling is mom to Katherine (8), Spencer (5), and Anne (2), all born via surrogacy. She started losing weight in 2020. By the 2023 Oscars, the change was visible enough that the Ozempic speculation started and never really stopped. She’s maintained the look through 2026 red carpets, including the Gold Gala and her pre-Golden Globes appearances.

The full drop is more than 40 pounds spread across roughly 6 years. That gradual pace is part of why her explanation lands as credible to some and suspicious to others.

Her explanation has stayed the same the entire time: smaller portions, running and hiking 15 to 20 miles a week, strength training, no more stress eating. She’s said she avoids monotonous routines, stays hydrated, and stopped weighing herself, going by how clothes fit and how she feels. The extreme pre-event juice diets are gone too. She’s said they only worked about 30% of the time anyway.

In April 2022 she told Entertainment Tonight, “I eat what I like to eat. I just eat less of it.” In 2023 she said her doctor told her she was the healthiest she had been in years. In the Bustle interview published this week, she added that she doesn’t wake up thinking she looks amazing, but she feels genuinely healthy. She has never directly addressed the GLP-1 rumors.

She’s written about her body before. She published the essay “Chubby for Life” in her first book and has been open for years about yo-yo dieting and not fitting the standard Hollywood body. The distance between Kelly Kapoor on “The Office” and the woman on the 2026 red carpets is part of why the transformation reads as emotionally charged for longtime fans.

GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy work by slowing gastric emptying and suppressing appetite. Patients describe the effect as simply wanting less food. The 2023 Oscars were widely described as the first Ozempic Oscars, and the drugs have quietly reorganized how Hollywood manages weight. Almost no one confirms it on the record.

Kaling sits inside a much bigger pattern. Kathy Bates has lost about 100 pounds over 6-plus years, 80 through diet and exercise and another 15 to 20 with Ozempic, and cites diabetes and family health almost word for word the way Kaling does. Rebel Wilson dropped 70 to 80 pounds starting in 2020 and later said she uses GLP-1 drugs for maintenance because of a “bottomless appetite.” Whoopi Goldberg has talked openly about using Mounjaro when lifestyle changes weren’t enough. Sharon Osbourne lost about 42 pounds on Ozempic and then warned people about the side effects. Kelly Clarkson has denied Ozempic specifically but confirmed using “something that aids in helping break down the sugar.”
