Russell Brand Divorced Katy Perry Over Text. Now He’s Weighing In On Her Love Life.
Russell Brand went on The Megyn Kelly Show to promote his new book on becoming a Christian. He spent the interview calling Katy Perry’s new boyfriend “Fidel Castro’s spawn.”
He was there to promote How to Become a Christian in 7 Days, a 7-step program structured like AA that ends with the reader accepting Jesus. Within minutes, he was attacking Justin Trudeau over the 2022 trucker protests and telling Megyn Kelly that Katy Perry “could come to her senses any minute.”
Brand widened the criticism, naming Barack Obama, Emmanuel Macron, and Tony Blair as a pattern of charming politicians whose public appeal, in his words, hides selfishness underneath.
The “Castro’s spawn” line is a long-running internet conspiracy theory built on a perceived resemblance and Margaret Trudeau’s friendship with Fidel Castro in the 1970s. It has been debunked. Justin Trudeau was born in 1971. The Trudeau family’s first official trip to Cuba was in 1976. The trucker reference points to the Freedom Convoy of January and February 2022, when Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act and froze protester bank accounts.

Perry has been with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau since the summer of 2025. They were first spotted at a Montreal dinner in July, went Instagram-official in December, made a joint appearance at Davos in January, and turned up at Coachella this month in matching casual fits, drinking out of red Solo cups and dancing to Bieber. Perry split from Orlando Bloom around the same time the Trudeau rumors started. She and Bloom share a daughter, Daisy Dove, who is 5.
Brand and Katy Perry, born Katheryn Hudson, married in a Hindu ceremony in Rajasthan in October 2010. He texted her “divorcing you” on New Year’s Eve 2011 while she was on a European promo tour. The divorce was finalized in July 2012.
The same interview included a separate admission. Brand said he had “exploitative” but consensual sex with a 16-year-old when he was 30, which was legal under UK age-of-consent law at the time. He described his past sexual behavior as “selfish” and “awful but lawful.” He continues to deny rape and sexual assault charges from multiple women that were first reported in 2023. His UK criminal trial is scheduled for October 2026. He has been married to Laura Gallacher since 2017 and lives in Florida with their three children.
The interview also turned to new allegations against Perry. In April 2026, the actress Ruby Rose publicly accused Perry of sexually assaulting her at a Melbourne nightclub around 2010. Both women were in their early 20s at the time. Victoria Police have opened an investigation. Perry’s team called the claims “categorically false” and “dangerous, reckless lies.”
Perry’s parents are Pentecostal pastors. She started her career as a Christian music artist before crossing over to pop. Brand spent the 2010s in yoga and guru territory before becoming one of the loudest COVID-skeptic voices online. He announced his conversion to Christianity in 2024 and was baptized in the Thames. The book he was promoting is published through Tucker Carlson’s imprint.
