If you’re reading this, it’s because you’ve lost a lot of great things in your life recently. You might have no home, no car, no phone, and less than $20.00 in your bank account.

You feel hopeless, lost, and angry. You feel cheated, and like the Universe has stolen everything from you on purpose. The Universe clearly has a personal vendetta against you.

You want to cry your heart out and punch a wall at the same time. All these feelings, mixed together like a poison pie, make you feel like a failure.

And that’s what really gets to you, doesn’t it?

You’re furious because of everything you’re going through, but at the end of the day, it’s you you’re the angriest with. You feel like you’ve failed at everything you’ve ever tried. This isn’t what was supposed to happen, you think.

Now… you have nothing. You don’t have one good thing in your life. Everything is a mess, and you’re falling to pieces.

Or so you think.

Let me ask you a question. When you’re in a bad mood, and something bad happens, what do you think? How do you feel? Obviously, you’re going to feel worse. Your thoughts are going to be more pessimistic than usual.

You may have no home of your own, but your parents took you back in without hesitance, so you’re not on the streets. You might have no car, but you have people in your life who can drive, and a bike just sitting in the backyard. You may not have your iPhone XS anymore, but someone surely has an old phone lying around. You may have less than $20.00 in your bank account, but you’ve somehow managed not to go one day without having a meal.

I know you feel like you have nothing, but you don’t have nothing. Your eyes are just looking at the gaps and blank spaces. You’re forgetting to notice the warm bed you sleep in, and the food in front of you.

You forget to count the thing that matters most: your family. Whether your family is made of blood-related relatives or friends, you have them. At the end of the day, you’re not alone, and they are not nothing. They’re everything, they’re their own goddamn universe.

And let’s look at you for a moment.

You swear you’re falling apart, just pieces of broken glass on the floor, but you’re reading this right now, aren’t you? You’re breathing. You’re still hopeful—even if it’s just a small candle flame—and you’re trying. Shit, maybe you’re just barely holding on like a glass cup taped back together, but the point is just that: you’re still holding on.

You are strong and capable, and you will figure this out. Your strength and bravery count. Even if you had nothing else, you would still have you. That is not nothing.

You might be missing things in life but look at the overall picture. You’re not missing everything.
