8 Perfect Songs To Help You Get Over It

It’s dreadfully difficult to put our most personal feelings into words, especially when those feelings are that of heartache. Luckily, music is a universal language and there are plenty of talented artists and lyricists to do it for us. Because (if you didn’t know) it’s 2013, there is probably literally a song for every emotion. I have compiled a list of 8 songs that perfectly capture my emotions during the “Recovery Phase”. Not only do these songs have lyrics that speak to the wounded spirit, but their peppy tempos and catchy melodies are guaranteed to get you pumped about moving on.

1. “Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)” by Robert Plant & Allison Krauss

The perfect speed-off-into-the-sunset-with-the-windows-rolled-down song. Put on your shades, take down your hair (if applicable), and put the top down (also if applicable – we can’t all drive pink Corvette convertibles, Barbie). Alternatively, play this in the scene of your autobiographical movie in which you triumphantly strut your stuff in front of the person who hurt your twisted little heart.

Notable lyrics: Some sunny day, baby, when everything seems okay, baby, you’ll wake up and find that you’re alone ‘cause I’ll be gone.

2. “DONE.” By The Band Perry

When you’ve finally decided it’s best clear a toxic presence from your life, this is your jam. No one delivers lighthearted spite quite like Kimberly Perry.

Notable lyrics: You’ve been wearing that crown and tearing me down, it’s been awhile since you treated me right. You strung me along for far too long ‘cause I never gave up the fight until now.

3. “Tonight I’m Getting Over You” by Carly Rae Jepsen

Pump this through your headphones or speakers as you dance around your house in your underwear, or better yet, on your way to dance the night away with your best friends. Get those endorphins flowing, child.

Notable lyrics: We’re not lovers, but more than friends. Put a flame to every single word you ever said. No more cryin’ to get me through. I’ll keep dancing ‘til the morning with somebody new.

4. “Nodding Off” by Wavves ft. Best Coast

It’s funny, I originally had Chris Brown’s “Deuces” in this spot, but then I decided that this song was obviously much better. This surf rock group’s music has the unfailing ability to take a sad song and make it better, as it were. Also, Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast is definitely among my Top 10 Girl Crushes.

Notable lyrics: Don’t call me friend; I’m not your friend. Don’t call me nothin’ at all. I stopped waiting for your call.

5. “Little Black Dress” by Sara Bareilles

This is one of many personally applicable songs on Sara’s new album, The Blessed Unrest. Actually stop what you’re doing right now and purchase the entire thing. You can finish reading this afterwards. Hello?! Go.

Notable lyrics: You came, lifted me up, but then you dropped a hurricane. Now I’m fighting to find the ground again. To steady my feet, get up off my knees, and just remember that I am more than just somebody’s puppet. I can find the cord and then I’ll cut it.

6. “How To Hide Your Feelings” by Man Overboard

Please succumb to the not-even-guilty pleasure that is pop punk. Air guitar and drum performances are not required, but are highly recommended.

Notable lyrics: I am leaving unexpectedly before I got to show you how months go by and I only feel worse. Try to forget the ones who forgot you first. And you don’t need him and she don’t need you. Gotta stop hanging around because the waiting hurts.

7. “Ready To Start” by Arcade Fire

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oI27uSzxNQ&w=584]

I was having a particularly rough patch in the romance department a few months ago, and while spilling my guts and receiving advice from a good friend in the middle of a busy casino, this song came on over the speakers. It was as if the indie gods were answering all the burning (hah, because Arcade Fire) questions in my heart. Watch the video for extra good feels.

Notable lyrics: And I guess I’ll just begin again. You say, “Can we still be friends?” If I was scared, I would. If I was bored, you know I would. And if I was yours, but I’m not.

8. “Your Biggest Mistake” by Ellie Goulding

I suggest you take a brisk walk with this song as your soundtrack. Warning: your mood may improve dramatically.

Notable lyrics: It’s a shame you don’t know what you’re running from. Would your bones have to break and your lights turn off? Would it take the end of time to hear your heart’s false start? …And of all the things you never explained, you know this is your biggest mistake. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
