Almost everyone knows what the LGBT pride flag looks like. The rainbow-colored flag is perhaps one of the best-known human rights symbol in the U.S. and around the world. But did you know that the gay pride flag isn’t the only LGBT flag there is? While the mainstream rainbow flag is supposed to represent the whole spectrum, there are individual ones for nearly every identity — pansexuality, asexuality, and transgenderism, to name a few. And then, of course, there’s the lesbian flag.

The lesbian flag, or “lipstick lesbian flag”, not only stands for lesbian pride, but also symbolizes lesbian women who exhibit more feminine traits (unlike the stereotype of queer women exhibiting stereotypically masculine traits). It’s striped like the gay pride flag, but instead of incorporating the rainbow, it only shows hues of purples, pinks, and reds, as well as a lipstick mark on the top left corner. While it’s not a widely-used symbol, and though some argue that the flag only represents a certain type of queer female, it’s also the closest thing lesbian women have to their own flag.
