When you’re a public figure, whether you’re online or on TV, you’re bound to get criticized by someone. And if you’re a woman, there’s a good chance you’re going to get some negative comments about the way you look. Body shaming is nothing new to women in the spotlight, but that doesn’t mean it’s right. It’s about time we start shutting body shamers down.

That’s what happened with this woman who decided to make some hateful comments toward Channel 8 in Dallas’ new traffic reporter, Demetria Obilor.

The body shamer took to Channel 8’s Facebook page to write:

Has anyone seen Channel 8’s new morning traffic reporter? Her name is Demetria Obilor and she’s a size 16/18 woman in a size 6 dress and she looks ridiculous. I understand that when I  watch Channel 8 I’m going to get biased reporting and political correctness, but clearly they have taken complete leave of their senses. I’m not going to watch Channel 8 anymore.

People immediately came to Obilor’s defense, including Chance the Rapper.

Obilor took to Twitter to address the drama and call out the haters.

In the video, she clapped back by saying that she was who she was — and that wasn’t about to change.

“This is the way that I’m built. This is the way I was born. I’m not going anywhere, so if you don’t like it, you have your options.

Some people believed that some of the hate Obilor received was because she’s a Woman of Color, which she also addressed in her video.

“You know, when you look a different, people think it’s okay to talk to you a little different.”

Thank you, Obilor, for speaking out and not letting the body shamers get you down. And thank you, good people of the Internet, for calling out a hater when you see one. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
