30 Little Things You Can Do Today To Better Yourself

Try to respond to people by assuming they mean the best, not the worst.

If you want to better yourself, start slowly by following this advice on Ask Reddit.

1. Don’t stop at that fast food place. It’s shit. It’s holding you back.

Go get some groceries and make you a meal. It’s fucking easy.

2. Just stand up. This is to the many people who have been sitting at a desk all day playing games, watching videos, browsing Reddit etc. There’s nothing wrong with any of that, but some of you will have done that all day, getting up only to eat or use the toilet. Just stand up and DO SOMETHING. Go for a walk, even if it’s just to a local shop. Do anything away from a screen, just for a bit. Getting up in the first place is the hardest part. Hopefully this causes at least one person to break the cycle of sitting down all day staring at a screen.

3. Try to respond to people by assuming they mean the best, not the worst.

4. Give someone a compliment. I started making an effort to give out one unsolicited compliment every day a few years ago. It’s really helped me to find the good in people.

5. Get up when you wake up. Don’t sit in bed on your phone. Get some coffee or take a shower. It makes you feel so much better.

6. Get the recommended 8 hours of sleep, it does wonder to your health, not just physically but emotionally also.

7. Spend some time on basic hygiene. Shower, shave, brush your teeth, put on deodorant, maybe some perfume/cologne. These things go a long way to helping a person feel better about themselves.

8. Every time you stand or get up, give yourself a good stretch. I stole that method from my dog.

9. Set reminders on your phone to do stuff each day, for example every 2-3 hours remember to drink, if you’re always on your computer every 4 hours remember to get some exercise etc. even reminding you to get to bed at a good time.

10. Block your ex.

11. Organize something…anything! Your desk, a messy drawer, the kid’s toy bin, the coffee table.

12. Try your hardest to make at least one of your meals in a day a healthy one.

Also, if you do eat a donut or something, it’s okay, don’t beat yourself up over it. Tomorrow is a new day to make good food decisions.

13. Remember to brush your teeth after eating. It makes your smile better in the long run, and that can improve your self-esteem and help you get into relationships.

14. Do jumping jacks. It’s easy as fuck, you don’t have to get a mat out or anything. Just pick a spot and start jumping.

15. Delete Facebook. Close your account permanently.

16. Smile, even on a bad day, more good days are coming later.

17. When you wake up, do 20 pushups/sit ups. In a year, that’s a lot.

18. Read 1 hour a day.

19. Clean your room.

20. Go for a walk, even if it is just 5-10mins around the block. Any type of exercise, no matter how small, is beneficial for physical and mental health. Take the time to notice the surroundings, the sounds, and the smells, and bring yourself into the present moment. It’s only a small thing can make a big difference.

21. Start flossing!

22. Make your bed in the morning as soon as you wake up.

23. Drink more water. Trust me.

24. Forgive yourself when you falter and be kind to yourself. Instead of beating yourself up, forgive and then get back on the path you wanted to be on all along. One bad move doesn’t mean you “messed it all up” if you just keep moving in the right direction.

25. Meditating.

26. Take 5 minutes of your time everyday to just breathe in and breathe out slowly.

27. Don’t drink too much alcohol.

28. Sit down with a pad and pen and write it all out. Write out what you want in life. Write out your goals, then write out what steps you can take to achieve those goals.

29. Say one thing in class. I’ve got 30 minutes left before class starts and my heart is just pounding. I hate this, but I know I can do it. I’ve done it before. I hate being this anxious over something so small.

30. Adopt a policy of ‘no zero days’.

Let’s say you want to write a novel. Ninety thousand words, no problem… until you realize all the other things taking up your time. You don’t have time to spend two hours cranking out a thousand words — so you do nothing, and the book never gets written.

Instead, pledge that you’re never going to have a day where you do nothing. Even if you only sit down for fifteen minutes — even if you only sit down for five minutes, get thirty words and then call it a day — you’re going to do something.

If you’re trying to train for a marathon, you don’t need to carve out time for a five mile run… but go around the block, just once. If you’re trying to exercise more, do five push ups, or three, or one. You’ll generally find that once you start, you carry on, and you get more than you were expecting. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
