Instagram Names

As millennials, we are mere slaves to Instagram. So, we decided to compile a list of the greatest usernames we have found, as well as give you some tips on creating your own. (If you’re looking for TikTok usernames, head here.)

Finding the right Instagram name can be a process, but it’s important. Your Instagram handle illustrates your identity, and also lets people who come across your profile know what your content is about. If you’re looking to change your name on Instagram, or if you’re starting an account, use these five steps in order to find something that is unique, available, and memorable.

Step 1: When first starting an Instagram, ask yourself what you want your content to illustrate. Is it going to be a personal Instagram, where you simply just post photos of your everyday life? Or are you choosing a name for a business account? The first step in locking down a good Instagram name starts with you locking down what your plan for your profile is.

Step 2: If your Instagram is going to be dedicated to a lot of personal posts for friends and family, it goes without saying that you should consider using your name or your nickname.

If you’re planning to keep your Instagram private and post funny content, or more personal content for your best friends and close family members, you may want to use an inside joke, a code word, or nickname others outside of your group don’t know.

Lastly, if your Instagram account is going to be a business, try to incorporate these elements: the name of the business, the type of business, the area your business is located, or other industry buzz words. It is also important to keep your username consistent for all of your business social accounts. So, once you select a username try to use that name for Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and so on. (If you want to get your business verified, read this to understand what it takes.)

Step 3: Once you know the elements of your username, try to think about creative ways you could organize the information. If you want to use your nickname and a certain number, play around with all of the different options. The same goes for your business account if you aren’t able to use the company name as is due to availability issues. However, always ensure that the name is clear and easy to remember because you still want people to find you. This usually involves refraining from using too many numbers, and personal information others wouldn’t know about you. Keep things simple, and catchy.

Step 4: Lastly, when you have found a few key elements you want to include in your username and the way you want to organize them, check the availability of the name. If you are having a difficult time finding usernames that are available, try using punctuation. Instagram allows punctuations and sometimes punctuation can improve an Instagram handle by making it more legible. Play around with different variations, and there is a high chance that you will stumble upon a good username that works and is available to use.

Now that you know the different elements to a good Instagram username, we’ve compiled a list of our favorites — just in case you needed a little more inspiration.
