What If God Is A Writer

I mean, they say that we are all just stories in the end, after all. Right?

Many people latch on to the belief that each of us is just another one of God’s creations, right? He loves all of us, regardless of who or what we are, simply because he is responsible for our existence. Well, what if God is a writer? What if we are all characters sloppily scribbled in the margins of his notebook, between doodles and reminders of our unanswered prayers? I mean, they say that we are all just stories in the end, after all. Right?

Speaking as a writer, I know that when I compose a story, it’s like I’m creating people out of thin air. When writing, I have these set guidelines in my head of who these characters are and what significance they’re going to become in my overall story that I am trying to tell. However, when it comes time to pick up the pen and try to write them in to existence, they always end up taking on a life of their own. In the end, I find myself learning from them. They end up being the sole creators of their own stories. I’m just the kid holding the pen.

What if God is a writer, and we’re all just characters in his story who took on life and choices of our own? What if he’s fascinated with how we turned out and who we’re becoming? What if, instead of the popular belief that, because of our collective sins, we are a failed experiment, we are actually an experiment that went terribly right? What if we exceeded God’s expectations? What if by breaking whatever precedented rules he set for us by coming together, loving, accepting and choosing each other over our fear of him despite the consequences, we ended up being more than he ever could have imagined? What if God actually ended up learning from us?

I wonder if God ever chews anxiously on the end of his pen.

I hope we keep him on his toes. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
