5 Things I’ll Tell My Daughter That Nobody Will Tell Her
If I ever have a daughter, I’d tell her, Don’t do what your mother says, For mothers aren’t always right
By Avnika Gupta
The mere thought of having a daughter, having my heart walk outside my body, scares me to the point of no return, but once I started thinking of it, all of a sudden, I wasn’t sure my heart would beat long enough or if my mind would work good enough, for me to be able to say all this later, to my daughter.
If I ever have a daughter,
I’d tell her,
Don’t take the road less travelled by
Just because it’s less travelled by,
For it doesn’t hold a hidden treasure
That none have yet discovered,
Nor is it the prince turned frog
Awaiting his first lover,
Creating a path where there’s none
Isn’t an act of courage,
For the brave go where they must
Not where it’s lone,
As some roads are
Not trodden upon,
For reasons,
Best known.
If I ever have a daughter,
I’d tell her,
Don’t eat what you want,
For food stuffed into an organ,
Not a demand put forth by it
Rather stimulated by the brain,
Won’t turn everything back to normal or
Help keep sane,
Nor would it determine
How happy you’re
When things are a miss,
But dancing like everybody is watching
Is a bliss.
If I ever have a daughter,
I’d tell her,
Don’t finish what you start,
For if you decide to walk
But see thorns
Which felt like roses,
Leave,
For
There are beginnings but no ends
To seamless oceans
And unwritten
Poems
And
Proses.
If I ever have a daughter,
I’d tell her,
Don’t wear what you want,
For coverings of silk,
Nylon
Or
Polyester,
Mere things hugging a frame,
Won’t reflect a
Stream of thought or a
Way of life
Whether
Liberal Or
Ostracised
Or be used as a tool to spark off rebellion
When criticised,
Yes, you like those hair messy
But pick up that comb,
Do as the Romans
When in Rome.
If I ever have a daughter,
I’d tell her,
Don’t do what your mother says,
For
Mothers aren’t always right,
I might choose your darkness
Over my bright,
Nor am I immune to
Failures,
Indulgences
And
Lust,
Look at me,
Do as I say,
Don’t blindly trust.
But for once,
Do what your mother says.
Do what your mother says.
