Quitting Stroke Medication, Quitting Weed, Walking a Runway at 67; Sharon Stone Calls It Reclaiming Her Life

At 67, Sharon Stone is remaking her life from the studio out trading movie-star routine for paint and a bedroom she gutted to make room for the work. The habit she picked back up in lockdown has become a full-blown reinvention, one her doctors, her sons and her own body have all had opinions about.

During COVID lockdown, painting took over her life so completely that she gave away her furniture and slept on a small bed by the fireplace. Her three sons walked in, saw the studio their mother had made of her bedroom, and asked her to please put on a bra.

The nails in the wall were the least of it. Sharon Stone slept on a small bed in front of the fireplace, threw sheets on the floor, and hauled in a big table and ever-bigger canvases until her Beverly Hills bedroom looked like a French artist’s loft.

Her sons Roan, Laird and Quinn eventually intervened. “Mom, we just think that you should wear a bra,” Stone told Variety they said. Her answer: “This is the same conversation my dad had with me in the 70s. Didn’t work then. Not going to work now.”

She studied fine arts in college before dropping out to model, arriving in New York with 50 bucks and a suitcase. The COVID lockdown reignited it, turning a few canvases in her bedroom into an around-the-clock obsession. She now sells her work in galleries around the world.

The reinvention runs deeper than paint. Stone got off a stroke medication last September against her doctors’ orders, describing the withdrawal as “going off of fu**ing heroin” and being sick for four and a half months. Then she quit smoking pot and got sick for another month. In June she closed the Vetements menswear show in Paris, her first runway walk in 33 years.

“This has been a period for me in this last year of really reclaiming my life,” she says.
