Matt Damon Said Yes to Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” Before He Knew What It Was

By

Nolan called Damon to catch up. About 10 minutes in, he offered him the central part in his next movie. “I think I said, ‘Yes,’ before I knew what we were doing,” Damon said.

Nolan pitched him anyway. He told Damon it was a two-word pitch: “The Odyssey.” Damon said he was shocked and thrilled.

Matt Damon told this to Scott Pelley on 60 Minutes.

The role is Odysseus. Nolan is adapting Homer’s epic as an IMAX spectacle, and it lands in theaters July 17. Damon signed on before he knew any of that.

He calls filmmaking a director’s medium. With Nolan on the other end of the phone, that was enough to say yes.

Nolan got his yes before he ever gave the pitch. Then he gave it anyway. Two words.
