Tom Holland Thought Christopher Nolan Hated His Acting on Day One of ‘the Odyssey’

By

On his very first day, in the middle of an emotional scene, Nolan kept yelling cut after about 3 minutes each time. Tom Holland was convinced he was bombing so badly that Nolan couldn’t stand to watch him.

The real reason was mechanical. The IMAX film cameras Nolan shoots on only hold about 3 minutes of film before they have to be reloaded. Holland didn’t find out until stunt coordinator George Cottle pulled him aside and explained it.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” hits theaters July 17, with Tom Holland playing Telemachus, the son of Odysseus. Nolan shot the whole thing on massive large-format IMAX cameras, the kind that capture enormous images and run out of film every few minutes.

That quirk is what nearly wrecked Holland’s confidence on his first day. He told Fandango he was sure he was completely blowing the scene, when really the crew just kept stopping to reload the camera.

Nolan had his own story about working with Holland. He joked that Holland never stopped peppering him with questions on set, and that he refused to answer most of them. When they shot the sequence with the Laestrygonians, the giants from the myth, Holland kept pressing him on how he pulled it off. Nolan says he just didn’t give him an answer.
