When Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce married at Madison Square Garden on July 3, both of them wrote their own vows and read them out loud from little books. Adam Sandler officiated. Paul McCartney performed for the roughly 1,000 guests.

Guests who later spoke to CBS Mornings and Good Morning America shared one part of Swift’s vows in particular. She told the room that Kelce, a star athlete in high school, used to sit with the less popular and bullied kids at lunch. Then she said she wished she’d known someone like him back then.

They both wrote their own vows and read them from little books, and guests said each set ran close to 20 minutes. Swift reportedly sang parts of hers. Kelce got emotional. The couple had handed out handkerchiefs to the crowd beforehand.

Guests shared one part of Swift’s vows with CBS Mornings and Good Morning America, and with People. She talked about the kind of person Kelce was long before any of the fame. As a standout high school athlete, he made a point of sitting with the less popular and bullied kids at lunch. She told the room she wished she’d known someone like him back then.
