The East Village was once a cornerstone for New York City music, culture, and was widely considered the home of everything “punk” — things have changed quite a bit. This excellent New York Times article describes how the neighborhood has been altered over time — trying to preserve itself as a unique and historic neighborhood, while simultaneously adjusting and adapting to changes in the city landscape.

Parts of the East Village are turning into Murray Hill’s upstart little brother, and this very funny aging rocker, the incomparable Lyle Munch*, certainly wants everyone to know that the neighborhood was pretty different back in the day.
