Read This When You Can’t Stop Comparing Yourself To Others
I know it’s hard right now.
I know you’re looking at everyone else’s Instagram or Facebook photos with the understanding that they have something you don’t anymore. Somehow, they could make it work when you could not.
Somehow they got it “right,” while you got it “wrong.”
It’s quite frustrating to see. It’s heartbreaking, really, to watch everyone else be able to maintain the thing you seemingly could not. And it just looks so fucking easy for them. It’s exhausting to watch.
But I want you to know that it won’t feel like that forever. Though it takes a while and a lot of mental effort, you will be able to talk your way out of those darker thoughts one day. You will be able to remember that people are people, and that comes with enough problems.
You will remind yourself that other people’s lives are not the measure we compare ourselves to.
We should be comparing ourselves to our own expectations for our lives. Not even our dreams, because those can become impossible to meet, but our parameters for where our lives are headed. Are we actively making decisions to ensure these become a reality, or are we too busy aching to live someone else’s life?
It’s okay to look at other people’s successes and become a little envious, in fact, that is quite normal. But the key to moving on from that is asking yourself what it is they have that you think you need. And if you find you have an answer to that question, what should you start doing in order to get it?
I’m not going to tell you that you should just be absolutely thrilled with where your life is currently at—that isn’t realistic. What I am going to tell you that dissatisfaction is a wonderful leaping point to your next achievable goal.
Your discontentment is merely a stepping stone to your next great adventure, but you have to see it as an opportunity versus a roadblock.
If you find you are comparing yourself too harshly to others, do not panic—utilize this moment as an opportunity to grow into who you want to be.
Start comparing yourself to who you want to be, who you’ve always wanted to be, and start making active steps to get there. Stop looking at others for inspiration.
Become your own.
