1. Get rid of negative or toxic people.

You should surround yourself with people who want to see you succeed. Anyone in your life who is not happy for you when you are doing well is not a true friend. You do not need anyone in your life that makes you feel bad about yourself. Don’t save space for someone in your life who is not worth your time. Sometimes, you outgrow people who you thought would be in your life forever and that’s okay, it’s part of growing up.

2. Focus on yourself.

Life truly gets better when you stop caring about what other people think of you. Don’t ever let fear hold you back. You should not have to apologize for being your own person. Believing in yourself is the first secret to success. Be kind, courteous, and go after what you want.

3. Forgive yourself and move on.

Negative belief systems lead to negative results. Every human being makes mistakes, learn from them and never forget what you learned from those experiences. Learn to forgive yourself. As cliché as it is life is too short to spend every day at battle with yourself.

4. Build a sense of self-discipline.

Push yourself because no one else is going to do it for you. If you want to get in shape, get a better job, or be a better person then what is stopping you? You do not need a list of resolutions or a new year to inspire you to create the change you want in your life.

5. Stop comparing yourself to other people.

The only reason you would be jealous of someone else is because you compare yourself to others. In the age of social media, we all fall into the trap of believing everyone has a perfect life. We all have flaws, we live in a world where we are told to strive for perfection. Perfection does not exist. Why would you want to be anyone other than yourself? The only person you should aspire to be is a better version of yourself.

6. Make time to focus on your mental health.

Human beings are taught to be obsessed with the external rather the internal. You are more than your looks, salary, and likes on a photograph. Your mental health is one of the most underrated issues in the 21st century. If you want to feel good about yourself then it must start within first. Read an inspirational quote a day, listen to podcasts, or self-improvement books.

7. Be generous.

Ashton Kutcher once said,” The sexiest thing in the entire world is being really smart. And being thoughtful. And being generous.” I couldn’t agree more. Reach out and help people because it is the most satisfying thing you will ever do. It’s the greatest reward of all.

8. Realize that happiness is a journey not a state of being.

There are going to be days of your life where you truly question your existence, purpose, and what your future holds. Everyone experiences moments of uncertainty. There is not a single person who walks up feeling like Little Miss Sunshine every day. You should be happy that you are alive, healthy, and have people in your life that love you.

9. Appreciate the little things.

Life is better when you start to appreciate the little things that bring you pleasure and realize how blessed you are. Your worst nightmares are someone else’s reality. Be grateful for every moment.

10. Compliment other people, magnify their strengths, and be positive.

It is a rewarding feeling knowing that you have the power to make someone’s day better. It’s such a warm feeling knowing you can tell someone that they look great, did a good job, or how nice their smile is. Compliments are not only based on appearance, you can say something like I enjoy your company, it’s good to see you, or it’s so nice to hear your laugh too. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
