The Yoga Class You Should Take Today, Based On Your Zodiac Sign
When it comes to the practice of yoga, there truly is so much to love. From enhanced physical mobility to increased mental stamina, the ways in which yoga can amplify an individual’s life are incredibly diverse. However, one aspect of yoga that makes it such a profound practice is it’s variety. Kundalini, hatha and yin are just a few of the numerous styles of yoga that students can easily access both in a studio setting or at home. But how do you know what class is right for you? Well for most of us, there’s more than one answer. However, with so many styles, it can be difficult to hone in on one (or a few) that you deeply connect with.
Are you curious to learn more about the various styles of yoga that exist? Then read on below to see what yoga class you should try next, based on your zodiac sign.
Aries- Power Yoga
(March 21-April 19)
As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries is a force in every sense of the word. Ruled by powerful Mars, those born between the end of March and mid April have a tendency to be strong-willed, honest, driven, and yes at times, a bit competitive.
So, if you’re a bold and passionate Aries looking to flow in 2020, you may want to consider trying a power yoga class. Often offered in a warmer studio space, power yoga is typically high energy from start to finish. Plus, with upbeat music and fast paced movement, this style will have you sweating through new poses in no time.
Taurus-Iyengar Yoga
(April 20- May 20)
Described by Allure‘s resident astrologer, Aliza Kelly Faragher, as a “fixed sign,” the Taurus is both loyal and reliable in nature. Consistent in all areas of their lives, Taureans are devoted to the things they love- which means, when you find a class you enjoy, you will likely be in it for the long haul.
While the Taurus is known for its enjoyment of pleasure, it also isn’t afraid to work hard for things he/she wants. For that reason an alignment based Iyengar class is likely a dream come true. With a specific focus on anatomy, Iyengar yoga teaches students to not only do a pose, but to do it properly. In addition, this style’s regular use of straps and blocks helps to promote comfort (i.e- more pleasure) in every posture!
Gemini-Vinyasa Flow
(May 21-June 21)
If there were ever a word to describe the Gemini, it would undoubtedly be “dynamic.” Born between May and June, this air sign is known for being both adventurous and versatile.
Vinyasa yoga, which is designed to link movement through breath, allows for immense variation on the mat. The flows, themes, and poses played with in a vinyasa class typically change on a regular basis, making it the perfect style to keep the ever-curious Gemini engaged.
Cancer-SUP Yoga
(June 20-July 22)
The emotive and home-loving Cancer is all about how things feel. Ruled by the moon, Cancers are sensitive and want to move in ways that allow for them to feel connected. According to astrologer and numerologist Sharita Star a Cancer feels most like themselves when in and around water. As a result, a yoga class on the beach or perhaps even on a stand up paddleboard (SUP yoga) may be the best option for you.
Leo-Aerial Yoga
(July 23-August 22)
Much like the sun under which it’s governed, the zodiac sign of Leo is a source of both light and vitality. Playful, brave and often theatrical, Leo is never afraid to take center stage. And it’s only fitting this sign is represented by the king of the jungle. Just like the lion, Leos are considered royal in their own celestial right.
So it is no wonder an aerial yoga class will have them flying high. Aside from the excitement of hanging gracefully from a hammock apparatus, aerial yoga incorporates a number of challenging practices including yoga, pilates and dance. From the drama of being suspended in the air to the grace needed to perform each pose, this class is sure to have any Leo vying for the front row.
Virgo-Ashtanga Yoga
(August 23-September 22)
As is standard for all earth signs, Virgos aren’t afraid of a little hard work. Ever the perfectionist, a true Virgo values detail, organization and systems. Plus, their desire to learn makes them the ideal student. For this reason, a meticulous practice like Ashtanga is perfect. In this style of yoga there are five Ashtanga asana series. Each student must master every pose in a given series before progressing onto the next. Given the Virgo’s natural propensity for doing things properly, this class seems a bit like a no-brainer.
Libra-Hatha Yoga
(September 23-October 22)
Hatha is a yoga system that utilizes both breathing control and physical postures (also known as asanas) to better align the body. Translated to mean “sun” and “moon,” this style of yoga is designed to help practitioners find a deeper sense of balance. And when it comes to Libra, no concept rings truer. As the only astrological sign in the zodiac to be represented by an inanimate object, the Libra is depicted through the image of a scale. A true embodiment of both harmony and balance, Librans are typically described to be diplomatic, sensitive and understanding. As a result, they will undoubtedly connect with the notion of exploring the balance between strength and flexibility in a hatha yoga class.
Scorpio-Yin Yoga
(October 23-November 22)
As described by celebrity astrologers “The Astro Twins,” Scorpio is the zodiac’s most misunderstood sign. Sensitive, powerful and often a bit intense, Scorpio energy is full of both passion and depth. As the sign of life, death and resurrection, Scorpios are known for consistently reinventing themselves. At their best Scorpios are known to be loyal, charismatic, powerful and brave. However when their energy goes awry, they can find themselves obsessing over or needing to control important situations.
Ironically, yin yoga is a practice of surrender. Known for its deep positional holds, yin is a passive style that penetrates deep into the body’s connective tissue to remove blocks, increase energy and enhance flexibility. Plus, “yin” is known to represent the dark, the feminine and the receptive- all aspects native to Scoripo energy.
Sagittarius-Kundalini Yoga
(November 22 – December 21)
Described by Yoga Journal as an “uplifting blend of spiritual and physical practices,” Kundalini combines movement, breathwork, chanting and meditation to increase both energy and spirit. As the philosopher of the zodiac, a Sagittarius cannot resist the opportunity to explore the depth of his or her own human experience. As a result, a class like Kundalini, that seeks to elevate spiritual connection, is going to seriously entice the curious Sag. Not to mention, the color white is associated with both the astrological sign of Sagittarius and the practice of Kundalini yoga. So it’s safe to say these two have a lot in common.
Capricorn -Hot Yoga
(December 22-January 19)
As the tenth astrological sign of the zodiac, the Capricorn comes from the constellation of Capricornus, the horned goat. Determined to show the world what they can achieve, Caps are tenacious and diligent in just about everything they do. And while they may not always be the most talented in the room, they are most likely the hardest working. Like the image of a goat trudging relentlessly up a mountain, the Capricorn is nothing if not persistent.
At their best Capricorns are considered stable and rational. However, at their worst they teeter on the side of boring. So what makes hot yoga an ideal class option for the competitive Cap? Well for starters, the discomfort. If anyone is going to thrive in less than ideal temperatures it’s the overly ambitious goat. Plus, as a sign known for playing by the rules, a drastic change in environment is sure to push the Capricorn yogi outside of his or her comfort zone. Not to mention, most Caps can always do with a little more excitement!
Aquarius-Acro Yoga
(January 20-February 18)
As the visionaries of the zodiac, Aquarians are known for having big ideas and even bigger hearts. Socially aware, radically innovative and eager to create change in the world, those born under the Aquarius sign have a tendency to rebuke all things traditional. “Because these water bearers are so deeply motivated by the spirit of egalitarianism, they enjoy teamwork and participating in communities of like-minded individuals,” says Faragher. For this reason, the Aquarius would undoubtedly benefit from a partner yoga class. In addition to building a sense of togetherness, partner yoga (also known as acro yoga) helps practitioners focus in on their more personal connections, an important reminder for the typically macro-level thinker.
Pisces-Anusara Yoga
(February 19-March 20)
Often referred to as the “old soul” of the zodiac, it is no wonder that Pisces is known for his/her empathetic nature. As a truly quintessential water sign, Pisces is described as being deep feeling, compassionate and romantic. However when under stress, Pisces have a tendency to rely too deeply on the needs and feelings of others.
Anusara yoga, which can be translated to mean “flowing with grace,” is an ideal practice for the heart-centered fish. Because this variation of hatha yoga focuses on personal growth and transformation, it can be especially powerful in helping the Pisces to set loving boundaries.
