The 4 Best Thrillers Streaming On Paramount+ This September

The weather is cooling but the thrillers are hot.

By

Hard as it might be to admit, summer seems to be officially over, spelling out the end of a carefree vacation season and the inevitable start of autumn.

While some people might be disappointed by the rapidly changing seasons, others can take solace in the return of our fall-themed activities, be it sipping a Starbucks PSL, navigating a haunted corn maze, or watching a suitably suspenseful thriller on our favorite streaming providers.

From cult classic murder mysteries to visionary sci-fi horror movies, here are some of the absolute best thrillers currently streaming on Paramount+.

Friday the 13th (1980)

Paramount Pictures

Technically speaking, Friday the 13th serves as one of the most famous slasher films ever made, influencing countless other entries in the genre from The Burning and Sleepaway Camp to Final Girls and Fear Street. Regardless of how you choose to classify it, this 1980 cult classic stands tall as a suspenseful (if more than a little shlocky) horror thriller, successfully kicking off one of the most iconic horror series in cinematic history.

Super 8 (2011)

Paramount Pictures

Years before the Duffer Brothers created the sensational ‘80s-centric sci-fi series Stranger Things, J.J. Abrams worked on the similarly-veined thriller, Super 8. An intelligent and entertaining homage to the early work of Steven Spielberg, Super 8 is an intriguing sci-fi monster movie that feels like a stylistic mashup between E.T., The Goonies, Close Encounters, and Jaws (in the best possible way, of course).

Seven Psychopaths (2012)

CBS Films

Most people might more readily remember him for his work on The Banshees of Inisherin and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, but it’s worth remembering that director Martin McDonagh also gifted the world the exceptional dark comedy thriller, Seven Psychopaths. A delightfully meta take on the traditional suspense film, Seven Psychopath expertly combines comedy, crime, and elements of a Tarantino-esque thriller into one sleek little package, thanks in large part to McDonagh’s exceptional writing and the performances of its ensemble cast (Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken, and many more).

Patriot Games (1992)

Paramount Pictures

To this day, it’s impossible to separate author Tom Clancy’s name from his most iconic fictional character, Jack Ryan. Though he’s been played by everyone from Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck to John Krasinski and Chris Pine, our hearts routinely gravitate towards Harrison Ford’s performance as the character in 1992’s Patriot Games. A faithful recreation of Clancy’s original novel, Patriot Games is a fast-paced, explosive, undeniably entertaining political thriller, one that makes fantastic use of Ford’s charismatic lead performance as Clancy’s recurring CIA operative.
