No One Is Coming To Save You, But You’re Going To Be Okay

You see, here is the brutal truth about people: they may have the absolute best intentions, but they will, like the leaves of the trees that promised they would never leave, drift away. I have some bad news and some good news. And I’m going to give you the bad news first. No one is coming to save you. A knight in shining armour is nothing but a pretty lie. I know from when you are a child you have been conditioned to believe that you need other people, that you need to be dependent on others, that you need to live your life by making sure a part of you fell back on other people, but here is the truth: when push comes to shove, people will let you down. Yes, even family. Yes, even your best friend.

You see, here is the brutal truth about people: they may have the absolute best intentions, but they will, like the leaves of the trees that promised they would never leave, drift away. They are temporary and unreliable. They have their own issues to work through, and no matter how much they promise they are going to be there for you, people will let you down. It’s human nature. You too, no matter how reliable you think you are, have let people you love down. And you didn’t mean it. And you’re still a decent person as long as you’re trying to be but it is impossible to no let people down in this world. So if you think someone is coming to save you, a knight in shining armour, please stop. Because the truth is you can’t depend on anyone.

Other than one person. Yourself.

Now here is the good news: You are going to be fine, because you will save yourself. You have been given every tool you need to save yourself. And it is entirely your own decision whether you want to save yourself or not. See, I have found, after several abusive relationships, that the one consistent thing that constantly helped me get out of them was my decision to grit my teeth, bear the pain and walk away from each one. It took me picking up the phone and calling the police. Other people could recommend it, but I was the one who had to do it. It took me, following through on my decision to leave. Other people could advise it but I had to do it. It took me taking myself to support groups that enabled me to help myself. Once again, my decision. This is what I mean, you can be your own hero, and only you are coming to protect yourself. Only you can control your decisions, your next moves.

You have the capability to be able to do anything. You have the potential to be your own knight in shining armour. You are the protagonist in this book, and it is your choice how you decide to save yourself, because listen, think of all those days you thought it was over and you still lived to tell another tale.

Believe in the hero who lives inside your heart. And know this: no one else is going to save you, because you already know how to save yourself. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
