With the first trailers for The Counselor and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty dropping and even more clips from Gravity debuting, this week has already been quite the win in Movie Trailerland, a beautiful theme park frequented by all film nerds. However, the real coup was the first trailer for the new Spike Jonze movie, Her, his first original work in almost a decade — and the first of his films he’s actually written. He hasn’t made a movie since 2009’s divisive Where The Wild Things Are (aka Wings of Desire for kids), and Her looks to be a return to form for Jonze, who made his name on his Charlie Kaufman collaborations, works that we’re as idiosyncratic as they were poetic and haunting.
Starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls for the voice of a computer, Her is an intriguing take on impossible romance. How can you love someone when you can’t even touch them? These are similar questions that Charlie Kaufman asked in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which was directed by Michel Gondry), and technology adds an interesting twist. Eternal Sunshine looked at love co-opted by science and industry, as technology takes over our collective consciousness. Her looks at the realities of love inside the machine, the realities of love and connection after we’ve wired ourselves in.
With a stellar cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde and the ever-dependable Amy Adams, Her is a promising addition to a Fall season stacking up with cinema goodness. Her comes out on November 23rd (or whatever that translates to in your city), and I’m already there. I want to fall in love. I’m ready.
