Anne Hathaway Says She Knew She’d Marry Adam Shulman the Second She Met Him, Right After Her Ex Was Arrested for Fraud
Anne Hathaway’s four-year relationship had just collapsed with her boyfriend under arrest for fraud. Then she met Adam Shulman, and she told a friend right away: “I’m going to marry that man.”
Hathaway met Shulman through mutual friends in 2008, the same year her relationship with Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri ended. Follieri was arrested that June on charges including conspiracy, wire fraud, and money laundering, later pleading guilty and serving prison time before being deported.
She’s said the timing felt terrible and that the breakup had left her wary about trusting people. The certainty about Shulman came anyway, from the moment she met him, even as she braced for people to think she’d lost it.

They didn’t start dating right away. Both assumed the other was already taken, so they kept their distance before things turned romantic later that year.
Shulman, an actor, producer, and jewelry designer, designed her engagement ring and proposed in November 2011. They married on September 29, 2012, at a private estate in Big Sur, California, in front of roughly 150 guests, and have kept their life quiet since, raising two sons.
