Russell Crowe Says Tom Cruise Once Taught Him a Blackjack System That Casinos Try to Break Up

The trick, Crowe says, is discipline. Get a group of people to hold every seat at a blackjack table. The first chair and the last chair make all the calls, and everybody in between just sits on 12 and above. Then you watch the math come your way.

Casinos catch on fast and try to break it up by dropping a stranger into the middle of your group. But when it works, it works. Crowe says his crew ran Tom’s system as a team and took $25,000 or more off the table.

Russell Crowe told this one on the Joe Rogan Experience, and it goes all the way back to the mid-90s. He guesses 95, 96, 97. He can’t quite land the year. What he remembers is Tom Cruise, then married to Nicole Kidman, giving him a call.

Casino mogul Steve Wynn had laid on a private jet to fly them to Vegas to play golf at Shadow Creek, the kind of course you don’t just book a tee time at. Crowe isn’t much of a golfer, but you don’t say no to that. A lightning storm rolled in while Tom was still out on the fairway trying to finish the hole. “Dude, put the iron down.”

Everything was comped. The jets, the golf, the lanais, the food. They got handed Michael Jackson’s lanai to change in, grabbed some Chinese food, then sat down and ran Tom’s blackjack system as a team.

Then they flew back to LA on the same comped jet and did the New York Times crossword the whole way home, finishing the last word right as the wheels touched down.
