Erika Kirk Faced the Man Accused of Killing Her Husband in Court for the First Time

A week-long preliminary hearing opened Monday in Utah’s 4th District Court in Provo for Tyler Robinson, 23, who is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk. Kirk, a conservative activist and the founder of Turning Point USA, was killed on September 10, 2025, while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. A preliminary hearing determines whether there’s enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. Robinson has not entered a plea. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Erika Kirk, who succeeded her husband as CEO and chair of Turning Point USA after his death, attended and faced Robinson in a courtroom for the first time since the shooting. She was visibly emotional and left the courtroom during graphic testimony about the shooting. Kirk’s parents and Donald Trump Jr. also attended.

At a preliminary hearing, a judge decides whether prosecutors have presented enough evidence to establish probable cause for the case to move forward to trial. No guilt is determined at this stage. On the first day, prosecutors presented evidence that included surveillance video and testimony from investigators.

Robinson has not entered a plea and has not been convicted. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
