How To Deal With Feeling Powerless

Sometimes we feel powerless in a world where we're taught to feel powerful. Where we're taught to put our best foot forward and fight for what it is that we love. Sometimes the world doesn't want you to succeed (thanks DJ Khaled), and beats you down until you feel like nothing.

How’s your year turning out so far? Is it everything you could have hoped for and imagined? Is life going super well, and you wouldn’t change a thing? If that’s the case, I’m really happy for you. For me, not so much. Not to say I’m not happy, because that wouldn’t be a fair statement, but my 2016 has definitely already turned into something I didn’t expect.

The last couple of weeks have been quite the interesting journey. There’s been a lot of up and downs, and a lot of me grasping at straws seemingly trying to hang onto something that was over long before I realized it.

Isn’t that sort of scenario kind of funny? How something could be so over without you even realizing it? Something you cared for, and loved, basically died right before your eyes and you didn’t even flinch. You convinced yourself everything was okay, when truly, it was not. You had an image in your head of how it should be, and fooled your eyes into thinking that’s exactly how it was playing out.

The mind, the soul, and the heart are funny things. Three things we need to survive (although I question the soul portion of that sentence) tend to play cruel tricks on us. They never seem to agree and they never seem to line up in terms of what’s best for us.

They are Curly, Larry, and Moe all wrapped up into a specimen that is you. (A really super duper pretty specimen, btw.)

Whether you’re having a great month, week, day, year, or life – sometimes we lose our way. Sometimes we feel powerless in a world where we’re taught to feel powerful. Where we’re taught to put our best foot forward and fight for what it is that we love. Sometimes the world doesn’t want you to succeed (thanks DJ Khaled), and beats you down until you feel like nothing. You think you’re doing great and then a big bus with the words FUCK YOU, YOU SUCK passes by and your internal cupcake crumbles. It’s not a hard task to feel defeated, even if it can make you feel like you’re alone.

Because you’re not alone. The girl you think has it all has been there. The really hot guy sipping his Flat White in Starbucks has been there. You’ve been there, your mom’s been there, heck — I think I’m there right now. But I want to remind you that today can be the day that you decide it no longer has power over you. Your bad days, your bad weeks, they are nothing to you. They can’t stand on one leg next to the power that you have over your life.

Whether that be from a job you hate, an abusive relationship, or a city you’re no longer in love with. We’re all equipped with the strength to tell whatever it is that’s hurting us to go fuck itself. Never let the big dick of life fuck you sideways into thinking you’re not worthy. That you’re not amazing. That you’re not powerful.

Never allow a single human being to be the only supply of your happiness. Never, under any circumstance, measure the love that you have for yourself against the love that someone else has (or doesn’t have) for you. Never, ever, allow a single human being to treat you in a way that makes you feel disrespected. That second that happens, peace right the fuck out. If you can’t control yourself, or your emotions, you most certainly cannot control anything else. You can’t control how other people act and you can’t control how other people feel. Once you accept this, then, and only then, will you become powerful. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
