There’s Nothing Magical About January

The point is that those tiny steps will keep pushing you along. Those tiny steps will create your habits, and those habits will be the building blocks of your goals and dreams.

It’s January – and now the whole world is at your gym…or maybe they’re in the produce section of your grocery store. Or showing up in your inbox every five seconds about a new sale or that perfect book or planner or tool that will make all your magical dreams happen.

It’s exhausting.

And look, I love a good planner, a good motivational podcast or book, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t write goals and “to-do” lists down daily.

But, it can be a little too much in January. It can be overwhelming. It can be downright annoying – like all of a sudden something magical happens on January first and poof – we’re now perfect, our lives are perfect, and everything around us is perfect.

Are your eyes rolling yet?

One of my favorite quotes is from Lara Casey – (at least I think it’s Lara Casey), but it’s, ‘there’s nothing magical about January 1st.”

Boom.

Sometimes I think we should all get that printed on a t-shirt and wear it around for the entire month of January.

There’s nothing magical about January 1st – but there is a certain kind of magic in wanting to do better, to be better, to live in a way that lets your best self shine, and lets you bring your best self to those around you, every day.

Channel the motivation of wanting to be better into making tiny steps to attain the betterment that you seek – and tune out the voices of the naysayers that shout, “what’s the point?”

The point is that those tiny steps will keep pushing you along. Those tiny steps will create your habits, and those habits will be the building blocks of your goals and dreams.

If you’re looking to make some changes in your life this coming year – that’s great. I applaud you. I’ll even cheer you on. Just take it little by little, day by day, and give yourself the grace and space to grow in a way that is right for you. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
