Even by waning ‘90s celebrity status, Marilyn Manson is a hard guy to keep up with. One minute he’s co-authoring a coffee table book with Shia LaBeouf, the next you’ll spot him in the studio with the Daft Punk and Justice affiliate Mr. Oizo.
“Shia is an art rapist,” Manson has raved of LaBeouf, who filmed a promotional video for Manson’s 2012 album Born Villain. “Not since Hitler has there been such propaganda for something [sic].” But I’m guessing that Mr. Oizo, who is French, would happily pass on such a comparison.
And you’ve got to love the French, anyway: while you’ll have to shell out $50 for the Manson/LaBeouf book, the latest Mr. Oizo EP Amicalement is available to download for free. The EP features the same groovy touches you’ll recognize from Justice’s catalogue, although Oizo favors a cleaner sound, and it largely reaffirms a suspicion of mine that French dance music is carrying on as though dubstep, or post-dubstep for that matter, never happened. (Call it “pre-dubstep.”)
Nevertheless, “Solid” is its strongest, most infectious track, and has dropped just in time for wedding season. It’d probably bridge “Blurred Lines” and “Thrift Shop” rather nicely.
