There will always be a reason why you can’t—maybe you’re ‘not ready,’ maybe it’s ‘not the right time,’ maybe there’s something in your way, maybe you’re just lying to yourself because you’re afraid.

There will always be an explanation for why you haven’t yet—too busy, not prepared, other priorities, got distracted.

There will always be something standing in your way—a person, a lifestyle choice, a relationship, a belief, a roadblock, a doubt.

There will always be an excuse—stop making one.

Whether it’s a career goal or fitness goal, a future plan or a next step, a change in habits or an idea for self-care, something you always wanted to do or a dream you’ve been dying to pursue, a relationship you’re looking to move forward in or a trip you’ve been longing to take—there will always be something standing in your way.

There will always be something in the back of your mind that holds you back. There will always be people saying ‘no,’ or advising you otherwise. There will always be inklings of doubt, thoughts of fear, moments where you question everything, even as you head in that direction.

There will always be reasons as to why you can’t, why you shouldn’t, why you must wait, or be cautious, or just give up. But if you live your entire life listening to those excuses, you’ll never get anywhere.

You’ll forever be stuck in the same place, writing to-do lists that never get crossed off, creating dreams that only exist in back of your mind and never become tangible. And that’s not living, that’s wishing.

And what’s the use of a wish if you never push for it to come true?

There will always be an excuse. There will always be something that stands in your way. There will always be some sort of hesitation or nervousness, trying to pull you back into stagnancy. There will always be people who don’t support you. There will always be decisions you make and then want to take back.

There will always be ‘too much’ or ‘too little’ or ‘not enough.’ So stop waiting for the perfect time, perfect person. Stop waiting for the stars to align, or for everything to make sense before you step towards the dream you have.

Stop thinking that you’ll go when the ‘timing is right’ or when it ‘feels good.’ Because the time is now. So go. Step. Believe. Do.

There will always be an excuse. Stop making one. Stop thinking you’re not ready, or that you need to be more prepared. Stop telling yourself lies out of fear. Stop doubting what you feel in your heart that you need to do. Stop waiting for someone to pursue you, or for opportunities to fall into your lap.

Go grab what you want from this world; only you can.

Maybe you want to redesign your apartment. Maybe you want to kiss the lips of a man or woman whom you’ve learned to love. Maybe you want to change careers, start a business, demand a higher salary for all the work that you do.

Maybe you want to move out of the city you grew up in. Maybe you want to adopt a dog, start a family, travel around the world. Maybe you want to finish that DIY project on your to-do list, or take that pottery class you’ve taped to your fridge for months.

Whatever it is, and no matter how big or small it is, stop making excuses, and do it. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
