Willow Smith Is The New Beyonce

Last last night, Willow Smith (yes that Willow Smith) dropped the video for her debut single “Whip My Hair” on her website www.willowsmith.com. By the looks of it, Willow is destined to replace Beyoncé in 5-7 years, so get suspicious if she suddenly starts an all-girl group.

“Whip My Hair” opens in a sterile, all white cafeteria with everybody wearing the same outfits. Y-A-W-N. But! In comes Little Miss Willow to save the day with her bedazzled eyes, lips, and nails and a gigantesque heart shaped braid pouring out of her head. She’s there to fabulize the room, showing them that there’s nothing better in life than being fabulous. Willow dips a single braid in a pool of paint (Crayola?) and before you know it, when the beat drops, she’s whippin’ that weave around like it’s her last chance, symbolically adding color to the sterilized room with every stroke.

The theme of the song is that you shouldn’t be afraid to be yourself. “It means just be an individual. Like, you can’t be afraid to be yourself, you have to be yourself, and you can’t let anyone tell you that that’s wrong,” Willow told Ryan Seacrest.

In other words: be faaaaaabulous!

And guess what, everybody? She’s nine, which technically means she’s one-upped Madonna’s daughter who, currently 13, has no singles to her name. When Jay-Z first heard “Whip My Hair,” he was like, “ ‘Man, that record’s a smash,’ And then Jay Brown said, ‘She’s 9,’ and I was like, ‘Whoa!’ And he was like, ‘She’s Will and Jada’s daughter,’ and I was like, ‘Whoa!’ and it just went from there.”

I wish my cafeteria was this fun. Now if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go get some weave so I can appropriately whip my shit around. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
