There are many moments in our life when we have to make some really big and terrifying life decisions that will certainly impact our future. One of those decisions, for us 20-something folks, is discovering what the HELL WE WANT TO DO IN OUR LIFE!

Damn!

Regardless if you’ve graduated from college or not, you suddenly find yourself in your mid-20s clueless of what you want to do in your life. Your head becomes house of sneaky rumination and potential conflict of interest between getting a “safe and ordinary” job or going after your dreams and ideas.

You are extremely unsure of which path you’d like to follow and how you should introduce yourself to a new job. In fact, if you decide to get an entry-level job at any company your resume will potentially look like this:

SKILLS:

  • Sleeping 12 hours a day;
  • Cooking frozen ready meals;
  • Pot washing, mopping, etc.;
  • Getting drunk AF and still remembering everything;
  • I can type without looking at the keyboard;
  • Many other skills that will take your breath away;

EXPERIENCE:

  • Have not been abducted by aliens yet;
  • I can use my arms to carry many things around the office;
  • Actually, I don’t need any real life experience to do an entry-level job, so please HIRE ME!

If you decide to follow your dreams, ideas and projects you will certainly experience a lot of confusion, disappointment, rejection, competition, frustration, anxiety…because whatever you’re going to do is going to be hard. No doubts on that.

So, my dear friend, you are literally fucked up. Either you go for the safe path or for your “dream life”.

Life in your mid-20s is gonna be hard, very hard. But you have to realize that you’re actually living in one of the GREATEST years of your life.

Here’s why:

1. Not knowing what you want to do with your life IS OK!

You know what? Not knowing is OK. Calm down! Don’t be consistently stressed about what you should do. Instead, this is the perfect moment when you don’t need to necessary figure out your entire life all at once.

This is the perfect moment to discover and learn more about yourself, about your interests, about your passions, about the world that surrounds you.

You’re in your 20-something, you basically know nothing about life. This is not the time to get a permanent job and get stuck in the same position for the next 3-4 years. Imagine one day your alarm clock goes off at 6 a.m. and you think to yourself: “Being unemployed would be AWESOME!”.

You don’t want that, right?

You want to grow. You want to learn. You want to discover.

So, all you need to do to keep your excitement, curiosity and motivation level high is VARIETY.

You need to change. You need to jump from one job to another, from one project to another, you need to discover who you are and keep improving yourself day after day until you will finally realize: “Damn Daniel! That’s exactly what I want to do for the rest of my life.”

2. It may sound like a cliché but TAKE RISKS.

You are young. You have no real responsibilities. You have nothing to lose.

Most of you are not married and don’t have children yet. In fact, just for a moment step back and look at your life and think about the big picture, you probably aren’t as trapped as you think you are.

So, this is the best time to freely explore your passions. This is the best time to invest all your energy and focus on the crazy business idea that you have. This is the best time to start networking and connecting with awesome people with similar interests.

This is the best time to travel and discover new places and cultures.

(I truly encourage you to go watching on Youtube DamonAndJo, two young guys traveling around the world on low budget. They are AMAZING and funny AF!)

This is the best time when you can afford to take small or big risks in your life…because, let’s be honest, if you don’t take risks now that you have “easy” responsibilities, how are you going to do it when you have a mortgage to pay and a family to take care of?

Taking risks is part of the cost of entry to a successful life. If you are willing enough to take risks with a purpose, risks that align with your vision, dreams and projects you will be able to create and live a life most will never experience. I guarantee that.

When you are in your 20s you should only do what excites you most. Don’t accept the first job that comes your way, probably a job you hate, because time flies and you want to earn as much money as you can. Do you really want that? Do you really want to jump into the real world without really knowing what you want in your life? Likely not.

Give yourself time to discover, explore, grow and evolve now that you are in your 20-something, because it’s a million times harder to say: “Screw it, let’s do it”, when you are 40 years old.

So, to anyone reading this article…Don’t stress too much about not having any clue about what you want to do with your future. You are young, fresh, educated and extremely curious. Use this priceless opportunity to discover more about yourself and create something special before it’s too late.

Now is the perfect time to understand what is going on in your life and “map” your vision and future into something that will positively impact you for the next 50 years of your life.

Enjoy your 20s, because you are only young once. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
