Indigo children are some of the most gifted, self-aware, intuitive, yet misunderstood Millennials. This is not to be confused with being intelligent or being a prodigy because the abilities of indigo children are not able to be measured by academic standards or perfectionistic standards set by this reputation-conscious society. Rather, indigo children possess great wisdom in contrast to people their age and gifts that transcend normal human abilities (things like clairvoyance, extrasensory perception, hypersensitivity to others’ thoughts and feelings, unnaturally strong intuition, predicting the future, etc.).

However, because they possess abilities and traits that most people don’t have or can’t understand, they experience greater struggles during their childhood and young adulthood, simply due to the fact that they cannot conform to the structure of this world or subject themselves to a purposeless existence driven by the fear of lack and the desire for external measures of progress.

Here are the common inner struggles that indigo children have experienced in their lives:

1. They doubt their own intelligence

They often doubt their intelligence and their ability to think logically because they struggled in school, especially with subjects that do not engage their fluid intelligence. Their mental capacity isn’t based upon memorizing or having concrete skills that would be applied to something profitable in the academic and corporate worlds. Rather, they identify as passionate artists and visionaries, so they are unable to thrive in places that expect them to be cold and calculating.

2. They’re traumatized by growing up

Growing up traumatizes them. They think that the world expects so much from them and they hate it when they have to sacrifice their souls for somebody else’s temporary pleasure and profit. They despise wasting their lives away just to earn somebody’s conditional form of love, which they know isn’t real love, but they often fear breaking out of this mode of living, which involves groveling for acceptance in society because of the way they’ve been punished for merely standing up for themselves in the past.

3. They enjoy being alone

They are accustomed to being alone and enjoy it very much, but others shame them for doing so, which causes them to feel selfish and guilty for desiring to spend a great length of time alone doing activities that rejuvenate and enlighten them. They don’t care about social ostracism in the way most people do, but they struggle to say no to social activities they’re uncomfortable with because they’re also people pleasers.

4. They get upset easily

They get easily upset when disastrous things happen. They’re hyper-sensitive to terrible events being broadcasted on the news and are so overwhelmed with sadness that they are crippled and traumatized by other people’s misery and difficult experiences. This is because they are highly empathetic and emotional and can’t stand suffering, especially at the hands of the greedy and powerful. They want the world to change for the better, but they often doubt their own power and influence, simply because they were conditioned to be as small and insignificant as possible since childhood.

5. They tend to feel inferior

They often experience ridicule whenever they try to speak up and say something that they feel compelled to say that goes against conventional norms. Thus, they feel like they’re being conditioned to feel inferior just because their opinions and ideas are contrary to whatever the status quo is.

6. They crumble under extreme pressure

Their natural mode of operation is a state of zen, so whenever they work in places that demand nonstop productivity and high levels of measurable output, they often feel burned out, chronically stressed, and on the brink of explosion because they’re not made to be machines that never fail. They thrive best when they are most in-tune with their inner selves and do work for the sake of their own soul and for the holistic growth of others. However, because most schools and workplaces do not allow people to operate this way, they feel conflicted, stuck, and unhappy with the extreme pressure that goes against their natural, most genuine selves.

7. They see the big picture

People don’t listen to them when they say something that is indicative of what’s most likely to happen in the future. Indigo children are able to view the future from a big-picture perspective and strong intuition. They are most wary of troubles down the road, but whenever they try to warn others, they are faced with opposition and ridicule because people view them as laughingstocks that shouldn’t be taken seriously just because they’re different, more reserved, and not socially successful.

8. They feel out of touch with most people

They feel very misunderstood and can’t stand being seen as threats, simply because they are different. Their ideal way of living is the opposite of how most people live. They need purpose in their lives, they need long periods of rejuvenation, and they want to slow down and enjoy the littlest, most magical moments in life instead of rushing and rushing to a road of self-destruction and emptiness. Most of all, they desire a life that places the soul above the ego, wisdom above crystallized intelligence, and zen above personal gain. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
