Katniss Everdeen is more than just the star of District 12, or the fictional dystopian world she’s managed to win over. Self-deprecating and charming, raw and honest, she’s the fighter in all of us. Here are some of her most memorable lines:

1. “Yeah, but I’m not very good at making friends.”

2. “And then he gives me a smile that just seems so genuinely sweet with just the right touch of shyness that unexpected warmth rushes through me.”
3. “Entrails. No hissing. This is the closest we will ever come to love.”

4. “What the hell was that? You don’t talk to me and then you say you have a crush on me? You say you wanna train alone? Is that how you wanna play? Huh?”

5. “You’re a painter. You’re a baker. You like to sleep with the windows open. You never take sugar in your tea. And you always double-knot your shoelaces.”

6. “My name is Katniss Everdeen. I am seventeen years old. My home is District 12. I was in the Hunger Games. I escaped. The Capitol hates me.”

7. “My spirit. This is a new thought. I’m not sure exactly what it means, but it suggests I’m a fighter. In a sort of brave way. It’s not as if I’m never friendly. Okay, maybe I don’t go around loving everybody I meet, maybe my smiles are hard to come by, but i do care for some people.”

8. “What must it be like, I wonder, to live in a world where food appears at the press of a button? How would I spend the hours I now commit to combing the woods for sustenance if it were so easy to come by? What do they do all day, these people in the Capitol, besides decorating their bodies and waiting around for a new shipment of tributes to rill in and die for their entertainment?”

9. “My name is Katniss Everdeen. Why am I not dead? I should be dead.”

10. “My mother and Prim would live there with me. No more fear of hunger. A new kind of freedom. But then…what? What would my life be like on a daily basis? Most of it has been consumed with the acquisition of food. Take that away and I’m not really sure who I am, what my identity is. The idea scares me some.”

11. “If I’m going to cry, now is the time. By morning, I’ll be able to wash all the damage done by the tears from my face. But no tears come. I’m too tired or too numb to cry. The only thing I feel is a desire to be somewhere else. So I let the train rock me into oblivion.”

12. “I can’t help comparing what I have with Gale to what I’m pretending to have with Peeta. How I never question Gale’s motives while I do nothing but doubt the latter’s. It’s not a fair comparison really. Gale and I were thrown together by a mutual need to survive. Peeta and I know the other’s survival means our own death. How do you sidestep that?”

13. “I stare in the mirror as I try to remember who I am and who I am not.”

14. “I don’t know what the explosion did, but it damaged something deep and irreparable. Never mind. If I get home, I’ll be so stinking rich, I’ll be able to pay someone to do my hearing.”

20. “Panic begins to set in. I cant stay here. Flight is essential…But I cant let my fear show.”
21. “I begin to fully understand the lengths to which people have gone to protect me. What I mean to the rebels. My on going struggle against the Capitol, which has so often felt like a solitary journey, has not been undertaken alone. I have had thousands upon thousands of people from the districts at my side. I was their Mockingjay long before I accepted the role.”
22. “Pity does not get you aid. Admiration at your refusal to give in does.”
