Marvel Comics dropped the bomb Tuesday on The View that one of their most beloved heroes, Thor, will now be a woman. Mjolnir will deem Thor unworthy and bestow the power onto a previously unknown female earthling. Series writer Jason Aaron will pen the new storyline and fans can expect it to launch sometime in October. According to the artwork shown on The View the character will be blonde.
“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” Marvel editor Wil Moss said in a release.
“The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Considering how old Thor is within the Marvel universe, this is a pretty big shift in Marvel’s continuity. The new character will officially take Thor’s name as her own later this year.
