The podcast devoted to “the basics: love and death and justice and truth,” launched their second season with no warning yesterday. After over a year since the release of season one, fans of the podcast expectedly lost their shit when they pulled a Beyoncé and dropped a whole new, suspenseful addition to the Serial fam with no warning. This time around we’ll be exploring the case that rocked the world in May of 2014. And that is the disappearance, capture, release, and subsequent trial of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
If you’re not caught up on what we know with Bergdahl’s case let me give you the highlights. Unless you’re looking for a more in depth play by play in which case, I suggest Google.
Back in June of 2009 Bowe Bergdahl was a private serving with his unit in Afghanistan. One night he stacked up his weapons, grabbed a menial amount of supplies, and walked away from his post unarmed, into the open desert. He was captured by the Taliban and held in captivity for five years. In 2014, President Obama negotiated his release which resulted in the freeing of five Taliban detainees from Guantanamo Bay. Bergdahl is currently under military investigation and on trial for two counts; one count of “desertion” and one count of “misbehavior before the enemy”, and is facing life in prison.
And now, he is the center player for this season’s Serial.
But, needless to say, everyone certifiably lost their damn minds when it was revealed that our favorite way to zone out on our commutes was back. After everybody soaked in all 43.8 minutes of Sarah Koenig’s oh-so-soothing voice, they all high-tailed it over to Twitter to freak the eff out about what they just listened to.
