Here’s Why You Should Never Apologize For Being ‘Overly Sensitive’

It's easy to be affected by this harsh, dark world when you're like me and don't have a hard outer shell, but you need to learn to be proud of your soft exterior and how rare it truly is in this day and age.

“It’s not that big of a deal.”

“Why are you crying?”

“Why do you care what they think?”

“You’re too sensitive.”

“You care too much.”

I can’t even count the number of times that I’ve heard every variation of the above statements when it comes to my overly sensitive personality, and I’m not sure how I feel about it either. Is it a form of character assassination? Or rather, is judging my personality as being overly sensitive a way to make me feel better when something or someone hurts me? I do know that it is beyond frustrating to hear over and over again.

Sometimes I would just rather someone tell me they get it and empathize with me just a little bit, instead of dismissing my feelings. However, I’ve finally come to terms with it, and I will no longer apologize for feeling what I feel or for being, as I’ve been told so many times before, “too sensitive.”

Unfortunately, the world we live in can be downright cruel. It sucks to realize that most people don’t care about you. They do what they do for their own gains. They are not selfless, they are selfish. They look out for themselves and if you get hurt in the process, then so be it.

It’s easy to be affected by this harsh, dark world when you’re like me and don’t have a hard outer shell, but you need to learn to be proud of your soft exterior and how rare it truly is in this day and age.

You are kind, you are warm and your eyes are welcoming. You let people in, you make them feel safe, and most importantly, you love. You know what hard times are like because you’ve experienced pain and suffering and you got through it. You’ve come to realize that life is short and can change in an instant and so, you know that you should always express what you’re feeling, because if you don’t, you might regret it.

You wear your heart on your sleeve, and when you feel, you feel hard. You stand by this rule: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.” If only the whole world could be this way.

If the bad things and bad people in this world have taught me anything it’s that genuine, kind, and selfless people do exist. They are like unicorns, beautiful and rare. So fight for them, love them hard, hold them tight and never let go. Let them know how you feel. Don’t be afraid to show it.

And guess what? Never apologize for being “too sensitive,” because it’s better to be the girl that thinks too much and feels too much than the girl who feels nothing at all. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
