India Now Believes the Frozen Body Known as ‘Green Boots’ Is Soldier Dorje Morup, Who Died Descending Everest in 1996

For nearly three decades, climbers passing a limestone cave near the summit of Everest have known the frozen body there only as “Green Boots.” India now believes it belongs to a soldier named Dorje Morup, who died descending the mountain in 1996.

His wife still half-expects a knock at the door.

Now, 30 years after a blizzard killed him on his way down from the summit, India wants to bring Dorje Morup down off the mountain and home to Ladakh.
