On February 12th, Danielle Ryan posted an article entitled “I Am A Ukrainian, This Needs To Go Viral.” Though it was dormant for a few days it eventually did go viral as the unrest in Kiev was peaking. On Thought Catalog alone, the video accumulated more than 3 million hits and over a quarter of a million Facebook shares. The video has now been seen by nearly 7 million people. Much has been said in the media regarding the video including the questions “who is Yulia” and “who made the video.” I reached out to Emmy Award winner Ben Moses, the man who produced “I Am A Ukranian,” to ask him how the idea came about, what he had hoped to accomplish, and what he sees in the future for Ukraine.
