Today there was a 50-50 vote on the nomination of Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary. That means that had LITERALLY any additional Senator voted against her, she would’ve been rejected.
Senator Rob Portman ran as a “moderate” Republican who promised to vote for his convictions, and not merely toe the party line. So many people hoped that he would be a voice of reason that would reject the obviously unqualified DeVos.
After all, she wasn’t even familiar with the infamous debate between using “proficiency” or “growth” metrics to measure student progress. She also claimed that it would be perfectly okay for a private school to reject a student with disabilities, and was unaware that federal civil rights legislation protected said students with disabilities.
Her only qualifications were being rich, using her wealth to donate to politicians, and inspiring this hilarious bit of a Saturday Night Live clip that was barely parody:
So Ohioans were understandably upset when supposedly free-thinking Rob Portman decided to cast his critical vote for Ms. DeVos.
And when they read his statement on the matter, they got even more upset:
Many people focused in on the first part of his statement, where he implied that being the “daughter of a public school teacher” made her uniquely qualified to be Secretary of Education. It’s a ridiculous notion, and people made sure to point that out — in a hilarious way.
Other comments on his Facebook post were more serious, and incredibly profound.
Apparently the only requirement to being in Trump’s Cabinet is being a billionaire?
