Earl Valentine was fleeing the police when he recorded this impromptu Facebook Live video, explaining his grisly decision to kill his ex-wife and son.

Valentine uses the video to say goodbye to friends, but also to rationalize his behavior:
“She lied on me. Had warrants taken out on me. She drove me all the way down to nothing. I loved my wife, but she deserved what she had coming.”
Valentine’s language in the video suggested that while he was running from the law, he was anticipating that his journey would end in death.
“I don’t know if I’m going to make it where I’m going, but if I don’t, I wish all of you a good life.”
Valentine had kicked down the door of his ex-wife’s home and marched toward her bedroom. She attempted to keep him out by leaning against the door, but Valentine managed to overpower her. His son tried to intervene, but Valentine ended up shooting both him and his ex-wife — after which, he fled the scene.
Police managed to hunt Valentine down, eventually finding him in a South Carolina motel. He died by suicide before police could take him into custody.

Police are still investigating whether there was a trigger for Valentine’s behavior. He hinted in the Facebook Live video that he “had been sick for a very long time.”
