You’re Always Going To Be Stressed About Something

Every time you reach a new goal, you'll stop stressing about old things, but you'll have new things to stress about.

You’re probably guilty of saying something along the lines of: “I have a million things to do right now, but after this week, things are going to calm down, it’s going to be less crazy, it’s going to give me a chance to breathe.”

Telling yourself this might seem reassuring, but it can be a dangerous way to think. It pretty much means you’re procrastinating. It means you’re not going to give yourself a chance to relax right now because things are too hectic. It means you’re going to wait to give yourself a break, to relax, to breathe.

Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is you’re always going to be stressed about something. Sure, some days the stress is going to be heavier than others. Some days you’re going to be stressed about your work or your health. Other days you’re going to be stressed about your new haircut or what kind of text to send your latest love interest.

But when it comes down to it, you’re always going to be stressed about something, which is why it’s important to learn how to cope with your emotions. You need to learn how to calm yourself down, how to talk yourself off a cliff, because you aren’t always going to have a loved one around to talk sense into you.

Sometimes, you’re going to have to deal with your issues alone. Sometimes, you’re going to have to be self-aware enough to take a step back, analyze your situation, and manage your temper.

High levels of stress can cause all types of health problems. Even though you want to put extra work into your career and into your relationships and into your friendships, you don’t want to go overboard. You don’t want to end up harming yourself while trying to create a strong, thriving life for yourself.

Learn breathing exercises. Learn your triggers. Learn how to differentiate when you’re working at a healthy pace versus when you’re on the verge of burning yourself out.

Even once you reach your dreams, you’re still going to be stressed about something. You won’t be stressed about dating once you find your forever person, but you might be stressed about planning your wedding or conceiving a baby or solving an argument. You won’t be stressed about making something of yourself once you land your dream position, but you might be stressed about keeping your position or impressing your boss or asking for a raise. Every time you reach a new goal, you’ll stop stressing about old things, but you’ll have new things to stress about.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, you don’t want to wait until tomorrow or next week or next month to give yourself a break. You might feel like the timing isn’t right to take a vacation right now, but you might not ever think the timing is right. You might not ever stop to check in on yourself, which is dangerous, because you shouldn’t procrastinate self-care.

You’re always going to be stressed about something — but instead of letting that discourage you, you should let it motivate you to take better care of your mind and body, to plan out breaks throughout the week, to go easier on yourself. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
