Why Every 90s Kid Needs To See ‘Detective Pikachu’
Get ready to get nostalgic because Detective Pikachu comes out on May 10th. It tells the story of Tim Goodman, a teenager who meets a Pikachu he can understand while everyone else simply hears Pika Pika.
You don’t have to know anything about the Pokemon universe in order to enjoy this movie – but, come on, we know you’re already a fan. If you haven’t bought your ticket yet, here are a few reasons it’s every 90 kid’s duty to see the film:
You’re going to see your favorite Pokémon from your childhood — and brand-new Pokémon you never realized existed.
Remember when you were younger and would watch cartoons on weekend mornings while eating cereal? What about when the first Pokemon movie came out and you cried your eyes out as Ash turned to stone? Just because you’re in your twenties now, it doesn’t mean you’re too old for Pokemon. Don’t kid yourself. This movie wasn’t made for young children. It was made for us 90s babies.
Theaters are giving out unique Pokémon cards on opening night.

I’m sure you still have an album of all your old Pokemon cards lost in your closet somewhere. If you buy tickets for opening night, select theaters are giving out special, limited edition Pokemon cards. They depict Detective Pikachu sipping on a coffee at his favorite café. If you get your hands on this card, you can complete your collection.
Detective Pikachu is based on a surprisingly epic video game.
Detective Pikachu is based on a 3DS game of the same name. It allows you to play as Tim, a teenger who is trying to solve the mystery of his disappearing father along with a Pikachu who worked as his father’s partner. If the movie plot is half as good as the game plot, it won’t disappoint. (Side note: The game is nothing like traditional Pokemon games, but if you enjoy cutesy stories with clever dialogue, then it’s definitely worth the playthrough.)
Ryan Reynolds is playing the voice of Pikachu.
Even though you’re not going to get to see him in Detective Pikachu, Ryan Reynolds is more than a pretty face and hot body. He’s a sweetheart. He’s hilarious. He’s talented. And he has an adorable voice. He’s the perfect fit for a beloved character like Pikachu.
The rest of the cast cleans up pretty well too.

You might not have heard of Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton until now, but they were cast for good reason. They’re perfect in their roles. And they’re pretty big Pokemon fans themselves, which means they’re going to do the franchise justice.
Pokemon brought you so many good memories as a kid — and it will give you even more as an adult.
Don’t even pretend you aren’t excited about this movie. Even though we might not see Team Rocket or hear this theme song, you know it’s going to be the best film of 2019. You know you’re going to be missing out if you don’t score yourself a ticket.
